Caleb and Abel?

Hoping for some opinions! Would brothers Caleb and Abel immediately take your mind to the Cain and Abel biblical story? My first DS is Caleb and was thinking of using Abel for DS2 as I love the name and I like the way the letters link together. (Take away the C and the letters are the same.)

Really don’t want the association with the sad bible story with it being about one brother killing the other!

I’d appreciete your thoughts!

also considering Joel and Jude

Yes, I went straight to Cain and Abel. Sorry!

MolkosTeenageAngst · 26/01/2025 20:39

Yes it would make me think of that, in fact when I saw your post title I read it and didn’t immediately twig that it wasn’t Caleb and Abel in the bible stories, only when I read your post did I remember that it’s Cain, not Caleb. I would also assume you were very very religious if your children were called Caleb and Abel, I see both names as overtly Christian/ religious.

MrWise · 26/01/2025 20:49

Caleb and Albie?

Lilyrudi93 · 26/01/2025 20:59

Thanks so much everyone for the honest feeeback! Safe to say I won’t be using the name Abel and I’m now wondering how I ever thought it was a good idea!

top names at the moment are:

Jude
Ezra
Joel
Asher
Gabriel

Ezra was going to be Caleb’s name but got put off by its popularity and I’m feeling a similar way about Jude but still love them both!

Was coming on to suggest Asher before I saw your last post.

Axel has a similar sound to Abel

Caleb and Joel sound so well for brothers.

Other ideas ..
Adam
John
Moses
Asher
Solomon

JessyCarr · 27/01/2025 16:23

Asher is lovely.

Nellyelephanty · 27/01/2025 18:25

I like Joel!!

MysteriousUsername · 27/01/2025 18:38

Asher is my favourite from your list.

Reuben is another of my favourite biblical names.

CaptainBeanThief · 27/01/2025 18:44

It's hard to say together ( for me) I said them out loud and accidentally said cable and able 😬

Lilyrudi93 · 28/01/2025 16:22

I’ve narrowed it down to Asher and Joel! Which would you choose with Caleb?

Well if you wish to keep with a Biblical name, then Joel would be very nice with the also Biblical name Caleb.
Somehow, to my ear anyway, Asher seems out of sync with the name Caleb, so I guess that's a yes from me for Joel, but it's what sounds right to your ear that matters!

Everydayflowers · 28/01/2025 16:39

Both are lovely names that work with Caleb. Asher is my favourite.

JessyCarr · 28/01/2025 16:41

Asher is my preference. Very nice with Caleb.

Dollychopsporkchops · 28/01/2025 16:42

My mind automatically read it as cain and Abel. Went back and realised it was Caleb. I would use Abel

TangerineClementine · 26/01/2025 16:03

Yes, sorry OP. When I saw the title (before reading your post) I immediately thought of Cain and Abel.

This, I'm afraid! It's a shame because they're both interesting names...just not together!

LiesDoNotBecomeUs · 28/01/2025 16:56

I see you have thought again :)

If you'd chosen this combination - you would never have had to explain why they were fighting!

BBQPete · 28/01/2025 17:09

Agree with the majority.
Glad you've decided against it.

I love the name Joel.
I don't really like the name Asher.

YorhshireTeaIsBest · 29/01/2025 06:53

I have boys (so know lots!) and only know 1 Jude.

Other ideas:

Isaac
Zachary
Felix
Levi
Tobias

WildCherryBlossom · 29/01/2025 08:11

Joel is an absolutely gorgeous name, perfect with Caleb.

sel2223 · 29/01/2025 08:31

Yes it does, sorry.

Also the repetitive letters thing that you like actually is the opposite for me, that would put me off straight away.

Let both boys be total individuals with their own names and identities. Number 2 doesn't need to be some kind of 'tribute' to his big brother

ETA - Asher and Joel both really nice names in their own right!

forgivingfiggy · 29/01/2025 12:26

Abel is just a bit too biblical - as in you hardly ever see it used outside of the bible story. I fancied Esau for my son at one point it's the same idea. Only with a big brother Jake to boot.
