I have a top 3 for baby names for baby girl but really struggling! I’d love to know opinions on the below three:

  1. Bali (pronounced bah lee)
  2. Soulie (soul Lee)
  3. Capri

i like an unusual ‘ie’ sounding name. Open to further suggestions!

thanks! :)

Agree.. Capri pants are a thing here.

I can't get past Capri sun though.

There's a rare name and then there's a ridiculous name.

Suggestions would be helpful… non ridiculous suggestions, obviously!

Bali - A lifetime of having to spell out the name as to UK ears it'll sound like Barley.

Soulie - just, no. And again, spelling problems, because of the word 'solely', dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/solely#google_vignette

Capri - If you want to do European town names, there are classier ones than this.

Thanks. Appreciate your opinion. Any other Italian town names you can think of?

OP remember that your child will be an adult and the names you have chosen are going to be difficult for her to be taken seriously! Sadly people do judge someone’s name ,particularly if she is applying for a decent Uni course ,professional job in the future!
If you really want an ie name ,there are hundreds to choose from!!
Evie
Esme
Marnie ,
Darcy
Leonie
Rosie
Josie
Chloe
Annie
You really do need to consider their future and every generation has higher aspirations than their parents!!
My husband had a ridiculous choice for my first born …Mercedes,I immediately stamped that idea out ..she is now in a professional job that her clients would not have taken seriously..think of the future.X

Viviennemary · 22/01/2025 22:26

Not familiar with any of them. But they are all pretty grim. Especially Capri. That's a car.

Backhometothenorth · 22/01/2025 22:29

Kari is a beautiful Scandinavian name meaning Pure

Nellyelephanty · 22/01/2025 22:30

First two are completely awful. Capri Sun just about tolerable

villamariavintrapp · 22/01/2025 22:35

Soleil?

I totally get that. Mercedes to me is an awfully ‘chavvy’ name and although we shouldn’t judge by names there are just some that you can’t help but! I wanted a name that couldn’t be linked to a person or known by a particular type of person to call their children it if that makes sense. I have an unusual name and had no problem getting into uni and landing a career in marketing, but again, my name isn’t one that gets used often, therefore, I don’t think people carry a judgement on it.

Laramie
Clancy
Mallory
Trudy
January
Kiri
Lowri
Marsaili
Tierney
Suri
Presley

Also

Genessee
Tennessee

I also like girls' names ending with the -ee sound. Some not so common ones (although some maybe more common than you want, depending on where you live) that I don't think have been mentioned:

Aliki (modern Greek version of Alice)
Briony/Bryony
Calanthe/Calianthe
Calliope
Cybele
Dione
Eilidh (AY-lee; Scottish Gaelic name meaning first light/dawn)
Ianthe
Ione (EYE-oh-nee)
Kailani
Lailani
Lumi (Finnish name meaning snow)
Mariamne
Rosalie
Verity
Xanthe

I don’t like any of them - for me, they have the same connotations that you describe with “Mercedes”. I think lots of people, probably unfairly, jump to conclusions when they hear a unique name, so these options aren’t providing the lack of pre-judgment that you say you want! Of the three, Capri is probably the least bad.

Ok so I’ll probably get these judgements no matter what unique name I choose?

Yes.

Don't try to please anyone else but yourself.

AKettleOfDifferentFish · 23/01/2025 00:30

How are you planning on pronouncing Capri? If it's after the island then it should be CAPree, but a lot of people would say it like cuPREE. It's not great as a girl's name either way...
