Quentin and other boys names...

Mobellij · 10/01/2025 22:56

We were almost 100% on Quentin but then decided to go back and revise the shortlist...

We do like Quentin, like Quentin Blake

Vincent...the potential NN Vinnie though conjures Vinnie Jones

Ralph... too popular?

Magnus... conjuring Scandinavian origins?

Lucian... but too much with a last name beginning with L

Raphael... again issue with last name starting L?

Francis...too catholic?

Opinions and advice welcome

I love Magnus, Lucian and Francis. They are among my favourite names.

EcruCardigan · 16/01/2025 17:38

Quentin Crisp - Wikipedia

bluebunnys · 16/01/2025 17:59

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quentin_Blake

Or

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quentin_Tarantino

Kids today will probably know Quentin Blake and Quentin Tarantino, rather than Quentin Crisp (I had no idea who he was myself).

rainingsnoring · 16/01/2025 20:37

I'm not very helpful because I like all your names.
Magnus and Raphael are particularly great.
Do you like Victor, Lucius, Soren or Caspian?

rwalker · 16/01/2025 20:45

Sack off Quentin a bully’s dream

Bessienol · 12/01/2025 21:33

I’m really surprised people saying the name Quentin is cool

Quentin Crisp! 😂

bluebunnys · 16/01/2025 23:03

Kids today won't care about your old associations. They're more likely to think Tarantino or Blake and, most importantly of any other kids called Quentin. The one we know is a friend of dc's and as he's a lovely boy, the name has really grown on me.

EcruCardigan · 17/01/2025 08:10

They might not but adults will.

sixtiesbaby88 · 17/01/2025 08:33

Quincy
Reuben

Was this guy a mass murderer or something? Grin

SleepingStandingUp · 17/01/2025 14:23

Lucien Lancaster
Raphael Lewis.

Honestly I think it's ok with the l's. These are my favourite two

Mobellij · 20/01/2025 22:53

Thank you for feedback.

Looking at ONS stats tables Vincent + Vinnie + Vinny makes it quite popular and can see there being potential for multiples in class etc, though I've not yet personally met another, hairdresser's grandson is Vinnie.

Brought up Rufus but perhaps discarded as being a dogs name?

Thinking of Edmund, but don't know if will blend into a sea of Ed's and Ted's.

Still quite stuck on Quentin...I accept though it seems to be a marmite name. It's clear PIL aren't keen though hasn't put DH off. They brought up Quentin Crisp but we had never heard of them. I quite like Q as a nickname.

I think we have nixed Francis and Magnus.

Difficult as people say we have time but we haven't been able to pick a boys name decisively since we started looking at baby names for our first five years ago so feels we are running out of time fast!

Also as we are that age lots of names are out as we have close friends with children of that name already.

I like Quentin (and your other names). It feels a little posh but also a bit bohemian. Rufus is a great name too.

what about
Julian
Fabian
Jasper
Gustave
Anatole
Leonard

bluebunnys · 20/01/2025 23:05

I still like Quentin best. It's a strong classic that everyone knows but it's not too widely used. I think most kids would think of the lovely illustrator Quentin Blake (or Tarantino)

Vincent is nice too. I'm not so keen on Vin and I find Vinnie a little cutesy/gangstery.

I'm not keen on Rufus at all

Good luck!

Edmund is much nicer than Quentin.
Rufus is nice too, I wouldn't think it was a dog's name particularly!

bluebunnys · 07/02/2025 08:27

If you like Quentin and Rufus, how about Reuben?

Mishmashs · 07/02/2025 08:31

quentin is such a cool name! I’ve never met one. It makes me think of uncle Quentin from the Famous Five.

bluebunnys · 21/02/2025 08:16

What did you go for, op? Good luck with the birth!

We actually now are more between Edmund and Edgar!

Thank you

From your list Quentin 100 percent. Magnus is nice too.

Zarasita · 24/02/2025 15:52

I also prefer Quentin. It's a well known name that's classy and cool but not overused. Q or Quinn are good nickname options.

I'm not keen n Edmund or Edgar at all, and they may end up as Ed (which imo is overused and dull)

I also quite like Raphael (but may run into an L starting surname)

If you are avoiding Catholic names, you might want to veto Vincent.

Zeldasie · 12/03/2025 11:29

I'm biased but I think Quentin is a great name Smile

There is actually one other a couple of years below in my ds's school, which surprised me as it's not that common.
