Hello Friends,
I’ve been thinking about the name Layla, and I can’t help but wonder:
What makes it such a captivating choice? 🤔
It’s said that Layla means "night" or "dark beauty" in Arabic—a name full of mystery and poetic charm. https://www.babynamesdirect.com/girl/layla
But is that why it feels so timeless? Or is there something more?
I’m curious to hear YOUR thoughts:

  • What comes to mind when you hear "Layla"?
  • Does it remind you of a song, a story, or someone you know?
some one said it's persian poetry influenced name https://islamguide.cloud/iranian-womens-names/ If you were to describe Layla in one sentence, what would it be? Or would you suggest a name with a similar vibe? 🌙

Not a fan. Very wet and overly girly - almost feels like more of a non-descript sound than a name?

sandgrown · 03/01/2025 01:34

My daughter is a Leila. She is bright , beautiful, capable and independent.

AmiablePedant · 03/01/2025 02:51

Er, famous Eric Clapton song? (Well, famous to those who know you're never too old to rock and roll if you're too young to die.)

Layla
You've got me on my knees
Layla
I'm begging, darling, please
Layla
Darling, won't you ease my worried mind?

paranoiaofpufflings · 03/01/2025 03:04

Also the Eric Clapton song for me - nice song with fantastic guitar work.
I generally don't fuss much about the so-called meanings of names, unless it's a direct translation of a word and has a literal meaning.
Layla is just really pretty in itself. Classic, elegant, not too common but still well-known.

My 21 year old daughter named her golden retriever puppy Layla when she got her back in June 2024. My daughter passed away in November and Layla is now a family dog. She’s calm, bright, cuddly and very well behaved. She might be a dog but everyone comments on her name. It is a beautiful choice.

Grannyinnwaiting · 03/01/2025 03:32

lovely name , not out there but still uncommon. I've only known one Layla and she was lovely

CuriousGeorge80 · 03/01/2025 03:50

Becoming very popular at the moment, I know three of them under 3 already.

Emanwenym · 03/01/2025 07:48

The Leila spelling is OK, but there are so many Lily, Lila, Lyra, Lola type names popular that it seems samey and dull. I don't like the Layla spelling.

veiledsentiments · 03/01/2025 07:53

I have a 27 year old Laila. She is half Iraqi though. And has beautiful brown eyes, and dark hair. Hardly surprising. She is in no way wet, or overly girly.

FrogOnAYuleLog · 03/01/2025 07:56

It’s nice enough but there are masses of girls called Layla, Lyla, Lyra, Lola, Lara, Lana, Lila (pronounced both Lyla and Leela), Leila (pronounced both Layla and Leela) around at the moment. So that would be a no from me personally.

emmax1980 · 03/01/2025 07:57

I like it, it bounces off the tongue well.

Nc54684 · 03/01/2025 08:06

sounds a bit American to me

Enko · 03/01/2025 08:08

For Layla bully.girl from.school
For Leila. Lovely baby my.neighbour had 30 years ago (we lost touch after I moved so only think of her as a baby)
I'm.not a big fan nor do I.think of it as classic or timeless

EmpressaurusKitty · 03/01/2025 08:12

The OP sounds very AI. I wonder if they’ll come back or if this is meant to be promoting the linked baby names site?

Leeloo1233 · 03/01/2025 14:17

I think of it as an arabic name, or someone who has middle eastern background

Totally agree, the post doesn’t flow right.

KilkennyCats · 03/01/2025 14:22

It wouldn’t be a particularly captivating choice for me.

What a desperately sad time you've been through. Sending you virtual strength and love. I'm glad you have puppy Layla to cuddle - dogs really are wonderful in times of grief.

Eric Clapton song. Love it, it’s my favourite name. I do know someone who recently named their baby after the song.

Bessienol · 03/01/2025 21:59

I think the responses are very telling about the demographic on MN and the baby names section. Anyone 45 and under don’t associate it with Eric Clapton
I think there are a lot of posters who are replying on the forum who have very old fashioned taste

theduchessofspork · 04/01/2025 00:26

Are you a bot?! That’s a very weird post.

I’m not keen on it but I’d spell it Leila if you do use it

AliceMcK · 04/01/2025 00:32

Eric Clapton song for me, though I thought it was Sting that sung it, I got confused with Roxanne.

Lylah/Lilah is very popular where I am, at least 4 of them in DDs primary school and 2 in my Year 8 DDs year group.

Twinklybeam · 04/01/2025 00:38

I like Leila. I also like Lyla, Lyra, Lola, Lara, Lana, Lila and even the ubiquitous Lily, but Layla looks ugly to me; just clunky and made up sounding.

Fully agree with this. Absolutely hate Layla, Leila is so much nicer.

I think Layla is beautiful and a lovely name. I'm partial to soft names myself and this is lovely.
