Do you think of Ellis being a girls or boys name?

(There are people of both genders with the name but wondering what comes to mind)

Boy.

Origin of the name: Elis, a medieval vernacular form of Elias, the Greek version of the Hebrew name Eliyahu, rendered as Elijah in the English Bible.

cantthinkofausernametoadd · 16/12/2024 19:45

Ellis- boy
Elise- girl

Jeeeeez · 16/12/2024 19:46

Boy.

I like Elise for a girl.

LindorDoubleChoc · 16/12/2024 19:50

Boy. I know one age 26. I think his parents really wanted to call him Elliot but couldn't because of another Elliot in the family.

Absolutely not a girl name.

hiddenselkie · 16/12/2024 20:18

I think Ellis spelling is associated with boys, while Elise spelling is all girls. They have different origins.

KirstenBlest · 16/12/2024 20:33

Are you mixing up Elis and Elise? They are not related.
Elis is the Welsh spelling of Ellis, or rather, Ellis is the anglicised spelling of Elis. It's from Elias

Elise is a girl's name from Elizabeth

Unisex but more for a girl.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 16/12/2024 20:51

I teach a boy Ellis but I think on it as a female name and got a surprise on the first day of term!

Girl

KirstenBlest · 16/12/2024 20:53

It's from Elias/Elijah.

AuntieStella · 16/12/2024 20:56

Boy

Both Emily Bronte and Edith Pargeter took it as their male nom de plume (Ellis Bell and Ellis Peters)

SkaneTos · 16/12/2024 20:56

The name Ellis, with that spelling, makes me think of the "Grey's Anatomy"-character Ellis Grey, who is a woman (mother of Meredith Grey).
(But I know that Ellis can be a male name, too).

In my home country, the name Elis, with that spelling, is a male name.

And the name Elise is a female name.

@LindorDoubleChoc Absolutely can be a girls name. I know 2 women called Ellis (age 34 and 31) and 2 boys (age 7 and 1) 🤷🏻‍♀️

No idea about origins etc but to me it’s completely unisex 🤷🏻‍♀️

Probably girl first as there's one in Grey's Anatomy, but either.
