Unfortunate name choice

dsandhisname · 10/12/2024 11:30

DS shares his name (first and surname) with a fairly well known person, who unfortunately has disgraced himself since.

I don’t really think I can change DS’s name but wondering if others would. The spelling is a bit different. But the name is identical.

@SatansBobbleheadedDashboardOrnament but we didn’t cross post, I updated some time ago. Besides, how many four year olds are called Ian?

Loads of four-year-olds are called Ian/Iain/H from Steps.

Jay Z?

This is who immediately sprang to mind for me. 😂

Poor wean.

Horses7 · 10/12/2024 13:19

Honestly it will all have blown over by the time he’s five - don’t worry xx

I wouldn’t change it but I think it was an odd choice to give him the name of someone so high profile in the first place - bit of a hostage to fortune.

Even though the HE thing will be forgotten in detail I can see why you’d be upset at people for years to come meeting your son and thinking - oh like that newsreader, didn’t he end up charged with sex offences? So does he have a middle name? Would you tolerate Huey?

DogInATent · 10/12/2024 13:22

Not worth it for Huw/Hugh Edwards. It's common enough.

SneakyLilNameChange · 10/12/2024 13:22

I'm guessing its Connor McGregor as thats a common little boys name.
Don't worry about, it'll blow over. Its actually a very nice name!

Ignore seen your update. Hugh Edwards is a nice name!

If you put your phone down mid message and pick it up again, you miss the updates.

Jostuki · 10/12/2024 13:23

As you've spelt it Hugh I think it's fine and a lovely name. Don't let that vile pedo Huw take the shine off it.

I am so relieved though that your child isn't called P Diddy.

Ellerby83 · 10/12/2024 13:26

Going against the grain even though people your ds's age won't know older people all will know HE. He was an incredibly high profile person at the BBC. Edwards is a common name but Hugh/Huw isn't I don't think, though maybe in Wales not sure where you live.

dsandhisname · 10/12/2024 13:26

To be honest @WitcheryDivine i didn’t even think of it. Were in Wales and Hugh / Huw and Edwards are very common here.

Now that was a cross post.

I think Hugh Edward’s is a lovely name and I think it’s neutral enough that people won’t associate it with the news reader. Also with the spelling difference, it changes his to a Welsh name, so completely different in my eyes. I think everyone just wants to move on from huw Edwards and the upset he caused. In a years time no one will even mention his name.

ladycarlotta · 10/12/2024 13:29

I honestly struggle to summon up Huw Edwards' name at the best of times, it's so normal. No shade on your Hugh, it's a nice name, just doesn't leap out as a combination. I'm sure there are tons of them in the world and particularly in Wales.

Nobody will remember by the time he's old enough to care, anyway.

It’s fine, don’t change it. It’s spelled differently and they are both common names. No one your son’s age will know about Huw Edward’s and by the time they’re all grown up he’ll be long forgotten.

DD has a friend called Eva Braun. Confused

Fair enough then - there are loads of newsreaders I couldn’t even name if pushed, I guess he was a bit different as he did all the big events.

if you’re in wales I wouldn’t even think of it

user2848502016 · 10/12/2024 13:38

Is it a common name/surname? If it is then he definitely won't be the only one.

I had an uncle called Michael Jackson - he was older than the MJ so just used to say he was the original!

FayCarew · 10/12/2024 13:40

If it's Hugh Edwards, Conor McGregor or Philip Schofield... or Huw and Phillip.

I think it's Sean Carter, and the connection with Shawn won't be noticeable.
Something like Harold Shipman would be.

Hugh and Huw could be Hughie/Shuggie/Huwi/Huwcyn

80smonster · 10/12/2024 13:42

More fool you for naming a child ‘Gregg Wallace’…

user2848502016 · 10/12/2024 13:45

Oh Huw Edwards I wouldn't even think of changing it - I live in north wales and there are thousands of them here!

@Ellerby83 , Huw is a very popular name with Welsh-speakers especially in the 50-65 age group.

2Sensitive · 10/12/2024 14:00

Conor/connor

I mean, if we changed our name's because of others people's behaviour, where do you draw the line??
3 changes a year, 4?

Onlyvisiting · 10/12/2024 14:05

dsandhisname · 10/12/2024 12:26

Serial killer of men, was she in Bristol somewhere?

But anyway this isn’t a serial killer, it’s huw Edwards. Although we have the Hugh spelling!

I honestly wouldn't worry in your case.
1- I had to google as I'd never hear of him.
2- hideous as it is 'this type if thing' is so rife that his name isn't going to remembered or know by the vast majority of the population by the time your ds is old enough to care.
3- the age means there is zero chance of him being mistaken for the same person
4- neither name is particularly uncommon so I'm positive he won't be the only one and you already have a different spelling.
