Welsh girl's names... bit of a different request...

... not for a baby - for me!

I've gone by my middle name my whole life - it was the one my parents have always called me - but I dislike my first name (the name I am never called except anywhere where there are official documents - like at the GP surgery). I like it on other people but it means nothing to me and there is no familial or cultural link with it, it's just a very generic name.

I raised the issue last week with my parents of finally changing my first name and they have been very supportive. I was willing to change my first name to another with the same initial to keep my current initials - to mirror my dad's - but having spoken to him last night he doesn't mind at all about that.

So... exciting times... I get to choose my own middle name! I could just stick with my middle name and my surname and jettison my first name altogether... but I really like the idea of choosing my own middle name. In fact I'm quite excited by the prospect!

So please can you throw your favourite Welsh baby names at me (I'm female).

I quite like Cadi, (An)Eira (I was born when it was snowing)... names you hear a bit less frequently. Not sure I have the gumption to plump for Tangwystl mind you! Oh and my name is Rhian, so can't have Arianwen or similar. Diolch!

You don't hear Llinos any more and it's a lovely name. My vote would be Eira though

Llinos is lovely and my aunty! Eira is great too, and is definitely on my list. I think I'm going to end up doing a doodle poll with my folks to try and whittle things down!

I LOVE Heulwen, thank you! Hadn't even thought of that one. And Olwen - white footprint, back to the snow theme! Lots to chew on, I appreciate it.

Not a girls' name per se but drove through a little Welsh village called Caio and thought that was a lovely name...

HomeAlonely · 05/12/2024 14:52

Eirlys
Tirion
Blydd

Oh that is sweet! I think I know it - Carmarthenshire?

Eirlys
Tirion
Blydd

I love Tirion but with Rhian it there would be too many similar vowel sounds unfortunately, because I genuinely think it is lovely. Eirlys was my great aunt and I am sorely tempted because again it relates to snow (snowdrop). Blydd I don't know in all honesty, it's close to Blaidd which people sometimes use as a boy's name... mind you, my mam loves wolves!

Definitely does and I have a deceased great aunt with the same name, so that might be quite lovely.

Medi? Lois?

I like Medi but being born in Chwefror, it's probably a bit too confusing for me to use it.

My personal favourites of Welsh girls names is Efa or sioned

TotallyTwisted · 05/12/2024 14:59

Lleucu. It's my absolute favourite Welsh girl's name. Or Heulwen as PP suggested, that's my second favourite.

I'm confused though. Is Rhian your current middle name which you're bumping up to first name? So you then need to choose a new middle name (or two!)?

I forgot to say that Efa is on mu list too, I agree it's lovely. Know a Sioned Haf that both of those are out unfortunately.

Lleucu is another good one I hadn't thought about - it is lovely and has a lovely meaning too. Heulwen also on the list. This is great, I never would have come up with all of these on my own - thank you!

I love Angharad. Depends on whether you need a short or longer middle name to go with your chosen first name.

HomeAlonely · 05/12/2024 15:06

Has Ffion been mentioned?

Eirlys was my mother's name, often shortened to Ei. She spent a lot of time in USA where she went by Liz!

Siwan?

My first name (will be) Rhian - so two syllables - and my surname is two syllables as well - so having three in the middle would work well and my mum really likes the name too. It is lovely - it's going on the list!

I had the loveliest aunt called Blydd, and I nearly went with it for Dd. But then I thought she'd probably spend her life being called Blythe (which I also like) and having to spell her name.

It has and it is nice but has a bit too much rhyming similarity with Rhian unfortunately, I do like it.

Eirlys is definitely on the list - I think my mum would be pleased as it was the name of her aunt. Ha ha - Liz!

Siwan?

Ooh hasn't been mentioned, but wonder if it might not quite work as my name ends in 'an' as well?
