Baby boy due soon and still can't decide on a name! We both like simple, fairly unique but definitely not unheard of names, I would be happy with most names on our short list so would be so so grateful for anyone else's perspective ...

Tristan
Oscar
Milo
Caleb
Quinn
Leon
Nathan
Justin
Eric
Seth
Callan

Nathan -8/10

Jostuki · 30/11/2024 10:21

Tristan - lovely
Oscar - ok
Milo - overused but a nice name
Caleb - no
Quinn - no
Leon - no
Nathan - no
Justin - no
Eric - no
Seth - no
Callan - no

Redwinedaze · 30/11/2024 10:21

like all of them apart from Eric, Milo and Callan (you’ll be setting him up for a lifetime of correcting people)

SereneCapybara · 30/11/2024 10:25

I love Oscar and Seth, and like Tristan and Caleb. Prefer Leo to Leon, prefer Nathaniel to Nathan. Not really keen on the rest.

Hate Milo by association with a school bully in DC's class so probably unfair bias.

DuchessOfSausage · 30/11/2024 10:59

Like
Eric - like the simplicity of it
Callan - like but will get mixed up with Callum
Tristan - OK, will be Tris

Not keen, but they're OK
Oscar - very popular, not keen
Nathan - not keen. Don't like Nat or Nate
Justin - not keen
Caleb - like it said as Cal-eb (phonetic languages)
Quinn - too close to a different word

No
Leon - not keen. Leo is much nicer
Milo - Milky drink, prefer Miles
Seth - too hissy

shoopshoopdedoo · 30/11/2024 11:06

Love Eric

Like Oscar

Don’t mind Seth, Justin, Callan

Dislike the others, especially Quinn

Mumofgirls2017 · 30/11/2024 11:39

I like Eric, Seth, Leon and Quinn best

whydoihavetowork · 30/11/2024 11:50

Nathan, Milo, Oscar, Quinn are nice.
The rest I personally dislike especially Caleb, Tristan and Seth.

Comedycook · 30/11/2024 11:52

Leon, Nathan and Tristan are the nicest imo.

BoleynMemories13 · 30/11/2024 12:01

"Fairly unique" isn't a thing, since unique means one of a kind. I'm guessing you mean unusual (not currently popular), but well enough known not to be weird?

I wouldn't call any of those choices unusual. Oscar especially, which has been top 10 popular for many years now. That wouldn't bother me, personally, if I loved a name enough, but it's certainly not a name I would recommend for someone actively looking for something "fairly unique", whatever that means.

There are loads of boys called Caleb around me too, and Milo is very much on the rise.

Tristan is probably your best bet. I can't imagine it ever catching on as a trend, but it's well known by everyone.

Rosybud88 · 30/11/2024 12:07

Honestly ….

Tristan - absolutely love this
Oscar - pets name (to me)
Milo - not strong enough for me
Caleb - not strong enough for me
Quinn - I’d use this for a girl
Leon - my cousin is a Leon so I’m biased because he’s lovely.
Nathan - don’t like it
Justin - don’t like it
Eric - love it with a K - Erik
Seth - not strong enough for me
Callan - I think there are better names which are similar, I’m a bit meh on this one.

LimeYellow · 30/11/2024 12:10

Like - Tristan, Oscar, Leon

OK - Justin, Nathan, Eric, Callan

Dislike - Caleb, Quinn, Milo, Seth

Yes that it was I meant by 'fairly unique', I had thought it was implicit given that no name that is unique by your definition is 'not unheard of'.

I appreciate some of the listed names are more popular, I was just trying to give a general impression of our collective name taste.

@cornflowerclouds , 'fairly unique' is meaningless. Does it mean something that is only used for one or two babies a year (e.g. Theophilus), or is it a name that is unlike any other but is used a lot (e.g. Arthur)?

To be unique you'd need to make it up and hope that nobody copies you.

Tristan had a bit of a moment in the 1970s.

It's not my definition of unique, it's the only definition! There's no such thing as 'fairly' unique. A name is either unique or it's not (thankfully not in most cases, as making up a name to be one of a kind is a hideous trend). Yet bizarrely I see it all the time on here, people who are apparently looking for "fairly unique". There's nothing wrong with the terms unusual or uncommon. I don't understand the need to throw in the word unique, when clearly that's not what you're actually looking.

Yes:
Caleb
Leon
Nathan
Seth

No:
Tristan
Oscar
Milo
Justin
Eric
Callan
Quinn (the Eskimo)

DuchessOfSausage · 30/11/2024 14:46

@BoleynMemories13 , I agree. Unique means being the only one of its kind; unlike anything else.

One of the following would be clearer:
unusual, underused, remarkable, special, outstanding.

HaggardyOldSkin · 30/11/2024 14:52

Tristan - not massively keen
Oscar - nice
Milo - no (reminds me of Tweenies)
Caleb - no
Quinn - Quim
Leon - ok
Nathan - nice
Justin - ok
Eric - no
Seth - ok
Callan - never heard it before but kinda like it!

SkylarH · 30/11/2024 14:55

Love Oscar and Leon
I know a wee girl called Quinn, so that sounds feminine to me
Tristan makes me think of Khloe Kardashian's ex who cheated :/ Quite American

Rainbow321 · 30/11/2024 14:55

Tristan 9
Oscar 1
Milo 2
Caleb 5
Quinn 10
Leon 3
Nathan 6
Justin 11
Eric 8
Seth 4
Callan 7

XmasNameChangeFail · 30/11/2024 14:58

I really like Leon and Nathan. Strong, classic, elegant.

Strongly dislike Tristan (wet), Seth (hate the ‘th’ sound at the end) & Quinn (a bit footballers wives).

Eric is pretty quirky for a child these days. It could grow on me.
