Which name do you prefer for a boy? Already have an Isaac.

I have a Jude, we also liked Elijah. My boy is 16 now and I still feel absolutely confident that we chose a good name.

Things to consider:

  • It rhymes with a lot of things
  • Friends may well call him ‘Judy’
  • People will sing ‘Hey Jude’ at him, a lot, ongoing…
  • Some may make an association with Judas, although it is a separate name

Still a great name.

Elijah, but also like just Eli.

I love Jude, really nice not to popular, would use it!
I really Dislike Elijah

I’d really like to understand why Jude being German for Jew is a problem.

I think the op should be aware that other languages might have different associations with a name than Brits or Americans do

The word Jude (pronounced Yoo-deh) means Jew in German and would be extremely unusual as a first name!

It therefore doesn't travel well.

Isn't that what these threads are for - to inform other users of aspects they might want to consider when choosing a name?

ChocolateCakeOverspill · 01/12/2024 20:50

I’m not sure why that would be an issue (I say that as a Jude)

SorcererGaheris · 01/12/2024 23:41

Both are nice; I personally like Jude a bit more, though.

Defo Jude imo. Elijah not remotely to my liking. Also worth saying Jude Law and Jude Bellingham internationally renowned (and JB played in Germany for 4 years). It’s pronounced v differently to the German word mentioned above

sel2223 · 03/03/2025 23:55

I can't choose as really like them both! (Also love Isaac so we clearly have similar taste)

Busted2006 · 04/03/2025 12:36

I think Jude has a similar softness to Isaac.

I don’t know why but I just can’t love Elijah. Even though it’s a perfectly good solid choice.

I would probably go with Jude.

I know you didn’t ask for opinions but other names that I think go perfectly with Isaac are:

Samuel
Benjamin
Joshua

Very biblical. Then I guess so many names are. I'm not a big fan of Elijah and I know a few, all known as Eli. I really like Jude.

The fact that it is the spelling for the word Jew in German, is no problem for the reasons other people have pointed out. I've never heard anyone say the name Christian might not travel well?

Nicolathecat · 04/03/2025 12:51

Both are lovely names, but I think Isaac and Jude sound best together
