Hello,

I live in the UK but originally from India. I wanted to keep the baby girl's name as Iraa. Would it be too close to or remind people of 'IRA' (Irish Republican Army)?

It’s beautiful. How do you pronounce it?

Wendolino · 18/11/2024 12:49

What a lovely name. I didn't think of the IRA until you mentioned it!

Mipil · 18/11/2024 12:51

No. It’s lovely!

Gcsunnyside23 · 18/11/2024 12:52

I'm from northern Ireland so I thought of IRA but think in England it wouldn't be such a jump to the link

Andoutcomethewolves · 18/11/2024 12:53

It's pretty! Would never have thought of the IRA

TheKindRoseExpert · 18/11/2024 12:58

@MiddleagedBeachbum closest pronunciation is here www.howtopronounce.com/ira

I think it's lovely, I didn't think IRA at all.

TheKindRoseExpert · 18/11/2024 13:01

@Gcsunnyside23 even with the additional 'a'? That's what we are worried about so we thought the additional 'a' would not remind of people. We have been trying to find other spellings for the pronunciation too but are struggling with it.

I immediately thought of the IRA, I’m Irish though.

Hotpinkangel19 · 18/11/2024 13:03

Never even crossed my mind OP

Yeah sorry on first glance I thought you made a spelling mistake before reading the title

Dragonsandcats · 18/11/2024 13:32

Im English and I thought about the IRA. Probably older than the other posters though!!

pamshortsbrokenbothherlegs · 18/11/2024 13:51

I know a little Iravati who goes by Ira (so I suppose even closer to the IRA than your proposed name) and it's never occurred to me.

I grew up with a Jewish male Ira so I admit that was my first thought when I met her, but since then Ira is just her name. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Thanks for all your replies. Wondering if 'Eira' would work? What do you all think?

OP posts:
TheKindRoseExpert · 18/11/2024 14:25

Or 'Iyra'

I think of Eire, Irish for Ireland and common name here.
How do you pronounce it?

I would immediately think of Eire.

romdowa · 18/11/2024 16:19

TheKindRoseExpert · 18/11/2024 14:25

Or 'Iyra'

This would probably work best. Eire is pronounced er-ah and your original spelling just made me think of the Ira straight away

TheBirdintheCave · 18/11/2024 16:48

There's a little Indian girl who goes to childcare with my son. Her name is Aira (pronounced eye-ra). It's a gorgeous name.

EssentiallyItsTrue · 18/11/2024 17:06

I dint think or IRA

All your suggestions a lovely. My favourite is Iyra although I wonder if people might misread it as Lyra.

Iraa
Eyra
Iraa
Really pretty names.

Derrymum123 · 18/11/2024 17:06

I have an Aira in one of my classes. She has Indian heritage, her name is stunning. I think your choice is beautiful.

SometimesCalmPerson · 18/11/2024 17:08

I know an Eira, it’s a lovely name.

EssentiallyItsTrue · 18/11/2024 17:20

Aira is really lovely too

WASZPy · 18/11/2024 17:43

I like eye-ra a lot, but I'm less keen on ee-ra as the video pronounces it. That just makes me think of an historical era.

I also think Iyra will be mis-read as Lyra all the time.

Personally I'd go for Iraa as I think the spelling is pretty and say it eye-ra- however I appreciate that might just not be how Iraa is spoken.

MrBiscuits24 · 18/11/2024 17:57

beautiful name. Didn’t make me think IRA
