As the title says really. Very hard for us to come up/agree on boys names, and even harder to pick one.

Emil or Elio? These are our current choices.

We live in France, we are from U.K., Spain, and Ireland. Other boys' names suggestions also welcome!

Ive not heard of Elio before.

Emil is more recognisable and not likely to have issues on pronunciation / spelling.

caityvh · 17/11/2024 15:43

How about a combo - Emilio? He can choose nickname when older

ChimpiestoftheChimps · 17/11/2024 15:51

I love Emil, it's my son's middle name as DH wouldn't have it as his first name!
He's Linus.
We also liked Ellis, Barnaby, Wilfred, Reuben.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 17/11/2024 15:54

Emile? Emil just looks like you've left a letter off

Wrongsideofpennines · 17/11/2024 15:54

I prefer Elias or Ellis but both of your choices are lovely.

I know a little 4 year old Elio but it's the only one I've come across.

I like this suggestion!

LolaCrapola · 17/11/2024 15:56

I agree with Emilio - it’s a combination of both. We have one living near us. And also makes me think of Emilio Estevez! X

dcbgr · 17/11/2024 15:58

Emil is lovely. For me, ending in an "o" makes me think there is some link to a country where this ending is common? If a family or ethnic name that would also be nice. But Emil fits in any country or heritage. Easy to say and remember and not likely to have three or four with the same name in the same class.

stuckonnamesbigtime · 17/11/2024 16:01

Thanks!

I like Emilio, husband not as much. I'm Spanish, he's Irish... he thinks it sounds a bit "too much" ?!

Emil is the Germanic/Scandinavian spelling, Emile the French spelling. The problem with the French spelling, is that in Spanish, the last E would be pronounced. That's why we may go for the Emil spelling.

I have come across two little baby "Elio"s recently, having never heard of it before. I think it's a lovely name, I really like it.

DinnaeFashYerself · 17/11/2024 16:06

Emilio?

Enzo

Henri

dcbgr · 17/11/2024 16:07

I am from an Irish background and would also just find Emilo a bit too much -- but that could be me being too parochial. I think Emil is a strong, sophisticated and intellectual name while Emile could be too close (to Irish ears) to Emily - a lovely name for a girl and one of my favourite authors (Bronte) but not so good for a boy.

AnotherDayAnotherOutfit · 17/11/2024 16:11

Emil for my vote.

Also like the suggestion Emilio.

Elio looks nice but tbh I'm not sure how to pronounce it, can see at least 3 possibilities and that would put me off.

Awaywiththeferries123 · 17/11/2024 16:11

Elio was probably made more popular by ‘Call me by your name’ I think it’s a beautiful name.

Sandysandwich · 17/11/2024 17:08

I really like Elio, it sounds like a happy sunny name.

Emil is nice too but my son loves ratatouille at the moment so I just think of the brother rat.

BoleynMemories13 · 17/11/2024 17:20

I prefer Emil. If he's not keen on Emilio, Elio is pretty damn similar.

Emil is a lot more straightforward.

AtomHeartMotherOfGod · 17/11/2024 17:27

'Emil and the Detectives' is a fantastic book, so I'd choose that. I used to love books with my name in them as a child 😂

As you said, that is a German book.

'Call me by Your Name' is a fantastic film, which I agree with PP has probably helped Elio grow in popularity.

I agree with your DH that Emilio is a bit flowery.

Am805463 · 17/11/2024 17:36

Elio is lovely

pixie12 · 17/11/2024 17:37

What about Emilio?

KirstenBlest · 17/11/2024 17:46

Emil, definitely. I've liked it since reading Emil and the Detectives as a child.

stuckonnamesbigtime · 17/11/2024 18:40

Thanks for the replies. I appreciate them. Sounds like Emil is slightly more popular 😊

If you use Elio it will sound like Ellie O.

BootballJoy · 17/11/2024 21:21

Emil

iridescentbloom · 17/11/2024 21:24

I love Elio! Just out of interest how would you pronounce it? X
