I love Vita and Odette. Ariadne and Calliope are nice, but not favourites and I’m not a huge fan of the rest. Lorcan is my favourite of your boys names, but I’m not a huge fan of the list as whole tbh. I think Elio might race up the name charts within the next few years.

MerryMarys · 07/11/2024 16:33

They all sound quite pretentious.

Pretentious? Pretending to be what? Confused

Atishooo · 07/11/2024 16:45

I love Calliope.
Emrys from the boy’s list.

BloodyFireworks · 07/11/2024 16:47

Thank you, lots to think about. I am a bit on the fence about certain names that have multiple pronunciations just because that might be an issue in the future. Will go back to the list with DH and look at these names.

I've seen this list before and it looks like just a random set of names.

StressedQueen · 07/11/2024 17:29

I love Ariadne and Odette a lot - they're gorgeous from your girl names. From boys, I only really like Elio. The rest are okay I think. Lots of mythical connotations!

Calliope and Vita are also nice from girls but the rest are awful.

I did post on another website about baby names, but yes it is just a random set of names?. We went through lots of lists of names and chose our favourites, is that not what everyone does?.

She wants to say she doesn't think any of names you listed are real names. e.g. she's judging you for liking unusual names.
I personally think your list is lovely

Calliope is nice ( and with that you will normally get Callie for short, which is sweet).

Emrys for a boy.

MerryChristmasToYou · 07/11/2024 19:09

@MistyF, I'm don't want to say that actually. I'm not judging anyone for liking unusual names, and I'm not saying they aren't real names.

They are real names, but the mix of names doesn't give any sort of feel as to why the names are on the same list, or at least it doesn't to me.

As I said we just went through lots of lists and chose our favourites and then narrowed down to ones we could agree on. I don’t think they have to have a similar vibe or feel to them, I like lots of different styles of names.

Fair enough. There are a few I like and some I'd not pick for various reasons, but if you like them and they go with the surname, you could wait until he or she turns up and pick one then.

TempsPerdu · 07/11/2024 20:48

As others have said OP your list is definitely eclectic, but it's so refreshing to see some less used names getting a bit of love - so often I click on naming threads but don't bother commenting as the names are so boring!

I'm not a fan of all of them, but love Calliope, Vita and Tansy from your girls' list. We considered Vita for our DD and I'm saving Tansy for a future possible dog! Went to school with a lovely one (girl, that is, not dog!)

From the boys' list I'd shortlist Orson, Lorcan and Emrys.

TempsPerdu · 07/11/2024 20:52

Adding that I think Ariadne is a lovely name too, but it's a big name to live up to, and again I went to school with one, who unfortunately was bullied relentlessly for being the total opposite of her name image - dumpy, plain, greasy hair, geeky NHS glasses... So I'd be wary of using it for that reason.

RuthW · 07/11/2024 21:00

• Phaedra
• Evadne
• Ariadne

Love all of these.

Boys - I dislike them equally.

Againstreason · 07/11/2024 21:00

Calliope, Ariadne, Odette

Ultimately though it's the reason why you like the name that will help you choose it.

Mitsouko1919 · 07/11/2024 21:10

Odette & Vita are both marvellous.

Of the boys, Linden is ok (I have a second cousin with the name) but the others are not to my taste.

Mumofgirls2017 · 07/11/2024 22:27

Good list.

girls: calliope 😍😍😍

tansy and Odette are nice too

boys: elio 😍😍😍

Orson and Cyrus too

Wolframandhart · 07/11/2024 22:31

Twyla and Orson

user1492757084 · 08/11/2024 08:55

My faves from your list ..
In order of preference

Circe
Odette
Twila/Twyla
Phaedra
Vita

Orson
Linden
Hayes
Lorcan
Kenan

The others don't thrill me, sorry.

MerryChristmasToYou · 08/11/2024 10:44

Twyla - looks made up and a bit cheap
Phaedra - looks a bit like Paedo
Evadne - looks a bit like Evade
Calliope - callipers
Ariadne - I don't like the sound
Eulalie - sounds nicer than it looks but I had to look up how to say it, and it doesn't rhyme with doolally
Circe - like but it's quite a name to carry
Tansy - nice but seems wildly different from the others
Vita - like but it looks like a diminutive. Makes me think Vitamin, VitaCat
Odette - Swan Lake. Don't like it. nn Odd?

Emrys- fine but I'd think there was a Welsh connection
Macsen - Not sure if it works outside Wales (seems a bit 'Jaxon')
Elio - too close to Eliot
Myer - too close to Maya
Cyrus - Billy Ray/Miley
Linden - too close to Linda
Hayes - & Harlington, Hazel
Kenan Keen or Ken?
Orson - to close to Arson
Lorcan - fine but I'd think there was an Irish connection

thepinkcow · 08/11/2024 10:54

From your girls I love Calliope, Vita and Evadne. Boys Emrys, Elio and Hayes are my faves.

AdaColeman · 08/11/2024 11:08

Phaedra
Lorcan

RedOnyx · 08/11/2024 11:32

I like Calliope, Ariadne and Odette. Vita is okay.

From the boy's names I only like Elio and Orson.
