Struggling for names for both girls and boys.?We have one of each already and could only ever agree on one name each time!
For girls we like simple and classic, like Rose, Evelyn, Grace but maybe not so common.

For boys we like names like Samuel and Daniel but can’t use either.

Any suggestions welcome, I’m drawing a blank.

I keep thinking Sarah is due a comeback. Caroline is also a beautiful, underused name. I also love Jennifer (Jenny), Victoria (Tory) and Rebecca. I am a teacher and have not encountered one of them in 30 years of teaching primary.

My boy’s equivalents would be Daniel (on your list), Simon, Matthew, Richard and Phillip.

None unusual but all uncommon.

So many of these names are in our family/wider circle already. I like so many, just don’t love them. I think I’m way too picky!

I do seem to get stuck on a name and can’t get past it. I just love Samuel, it’s always been my favourite but it’s my sons middle name, do you think that definitely puts it out of the running?!

Well it didn't seem to matter to William and Kate in the naming of Louie (which is one of George's middle names) but it's not something I would do as I want my children to all have their own completely separate identities (which, imo. starts with giving them completely different names)

Moreteaandchocolate · 07/11/2024 14:40

There are no rules - if Samuel feels like the right name then use it - it’s just about how you explain it to your kids over the years - It’ll just become part of your family story 🥰

miniaturepixieonacid · 07/11/2024 14:52

If you absolutely love Samuel and nothing else comes close to it then I think you'll always regret not using it. How old is your other son? If he's 3 or younger, could you change his middle name to something else? If he's older, it's a bit trickier but I would use Samuel if you can't find something else you love.

Sampson? Solomon? Simeon? Simon? Gabriel? Raphael?

Girls names that are simple and classic but not too popular:
Anna, Anne, Amy, Beatrix, Clare, Clara, Daphne, Emma, Frances, Hannah, Hope, Juliet, Joanna, Kate, Lois, Laura, Miranda, Maria, Mary, Naomi, Rachel, Sarah, Stella, Tessa, Verity

I think it's fine to use your son's middle name if that's the only name you truly love. Middle names are so rarely used, and it's nice to have family connections when it comes to names.

Prince George has Louis as one of his middle names, which was later used for his younger brother. If it's good enough for the royals...

I think Samuel is a very good name, and it's fine to use as a first name even if already used as a middle name.

I suggest, for girl names, Venetia or Sibylla.
