Clemency, yes, no, maybe?

I really like Clemency. I feel it is a positive , happy name and a feisty one. I really like Clemmie as a nickname but when I mentioned it to a friend she was really down on it.

i had a French friend at uni who was called Clémence which I thought at the time sounded so sophisticated but again very negative reaction from family

Hard pass from me, sorry.

wafflesmgee · 31/10/2024 20:18

I don't like it. Sorry.
I mean, what if your child is having a tantrum in the supermarket and you have to shout "clemency" loudly?! People will think you are crying out for mercy rather than just saying your child's name.

@Supermand
Given the connotations it has (Death Row), of course she will sound foolish.

It means mercy (like all those Clem- names). It’s really odd to me that people on here haven’t come across it as a name. I can see it might not be everyone’s choice but telling someone they’d sound foolish for using a perfectly normal name is pretty rude.

I love Clemency as a name, much better than Clementine .
One of Susan Hill's daughters is called Clemency if I remember right.( Susan Hill the writer)

lovelyhat · 31/10/2024 20:31

I have a cousin Clemency, although she usually gets called Clemmie for short. Beautiful name - I do love virtue names though. Verity and Constance are my favourites.

Ruthietuthie · 31/10/2024 20:33

Ignore the "you'll sound foolish" comments. The only people who look foolish are those who might criticize the name, not knowing what it really means. Other people's ignorance shouldn't guide your life choices.
It's a beautiful name, with a lovely meaning, and adorable nicknames. I LOVE it.

VintedVirgin · 31/10/2024 20:37

Love Clemency! I think Clem is a great shortening but less keen on Clemmie which sounds dangerously close to chlamydia. I know 3 little Clementines and an adult Clement but no Clemency. I say go for it!

DearGoldBee · 31/10/2024 20:40

Awful. Sorry OP

HumphreyCobblers · 31/10/2024 20:40

I too thought of Susan Hill's third daughter. I love this name. It is nicer than Clementine IMO.

It is a perfectly normal name also!

seven201 · 31/10/2024 20:43

I know a Clement and he gets shortened to Clem or Clemmie, although I guess he'll grown out of that one as he gets older. I like it.

Clémence Or Clementine is lovely . Clemency reminds me of the term of like getting off jail time

This! I really like Clementine especially.

LlynTegid · 31/10/2024 20:46

No.

Moreteaandchocolate · 31/10/2024 20:53

I’m not the biggest fan of any of the Clem names as I’m not too keen on Clemmie, but that’s just my personal preference- and if anything I think I prefer Clemency to Clementine.

Bideshi · 31/10/2024 20:53

Love it. Nice virtue name like Verity.

NeckolasCage · 31/10/2024 21:03

I prefer BustedFromJail or IDoneMyTimeGuv

NeckolasCage · 31/10/2024 21:04

No seriously… it’s not great. It isn’t actually a very nice sound, it’s a bit hard to say, will sound terrible in some accents, Clemmie just sounds like clammy or phlegm- don’t do it.

Love it. Nice virtue name like Verity.

Verity is lovely

DrizzleMySwizzle · 31/10/2024 21:11

I'm not a big fan of virtue names. Find them a bit wet.

I picture Clemency as the morally upright heroine of some very chaste Victorian novel for young ladies. 'Clemency - Faithful and True'.

She probably dies of TB. In a ladylike fashion.

FennelFan · 31/10/2024 21:12

Too death-row-y for me

Nannyfannybanny · 31/10/2024 21:14

No, and Clementine is an orange.

TribulationPeriwinkle · 31/10/2024 21:20

I love it.

Miss Clemency Millington and her spinster chaperone, Great Aunt Euphemia.

Evenstar · 31/10/2024 21:50

It’s a beautiful name, though I also knew a lovely little girl called Clementine nn Clemmy.

twentysevendresses · 31/10/2024 21:57

Hard no from me 😱

BasiliskStare · 31/10/2024 21:58

Ds has 4 friends "Clemmie /Clemmy " either Clemency or Clementine. I don't think it's a name to be "down on" . I think Clemmy / Clemmie is rather pretty.
