For a baby girl - Tess or Flora? What kind of vibe do you get from each name? I'm interested to get an idea of how each is perceived by others.

thank you

My Grand daughter Flora is a beautiful, strong, kind, sensitive young woman. Was called 'Butter' at school (kindly - everyone genuinely liked her). She was never a 'Marge'! Everyone I know who hears my granddaughters' names, Poppy and Flora, absolutely loves them. My little bouquet of granddaughters 😍

Tess-ticle and flora margarine 😂

Go with Tessa instead

redtrain123 · 30/10/2024 02:23

Tess

GiraffeTree · 30/10/2024 02:27

Tess - lovely

Firsttimebabymummy · 30/10/2024 05:38

Flora I imagine a sweet, blonde
Tess would be cool

I'd rather be called Tess so I'd pick that one

I like Flora more, but dislike margarine connection.

I like both of them a lot (Tess of the d'U/Cold Comfort Farm etc). Which goes best with the surname?
Maybe not Tess Tickell or Flora Margerison!

user1492757084 · 30/10/2024 10:22

Both are nice.

Which one sounds best with your surname when said aloud?
Say them out loud.
For example.
The R in Flora could sound tongue twisty with some surnames like Flora Rattan or Flora Raleigh
The S in Tess could sound clumsy with a surname starting with S or when the S makes a real word with your surname, such as Tess Losher or Tess Purts.

17caterpillars1mouse · 30/10/2024 21:23

I like both

In my mind

Tess - strong, quirky personality. Has a love of bright colours, musical, but a bit clumsy. Quiet but is very able when it comes to standing up for herself and others. Intelligent but not sporty.

Flora - polite, gentle, positive soul, a little naive but very friendly and open as a person. Goes out of her way for others, put more of a pushover than Tess. Likes pastel colours and muted tones. Has a girly side and loves reading and shopping. Possibly plays netball.

Thanks so much for all the comments! I'm loving the detailed pictures of what Tess and Flora might be like! It's hard to say what would go better with the surname - neither is terrible or perfect! It's a slightly long surname, though only 2 syllables. Tessa would flow better than Tess, but we prefer Tess. Flora sounds fine, though the 'or' sound is slightly repeated in the surname (not sure if that makes them sound better or worse together!)

This is so strange - these were my exact 2 baby names for my girl born in summer! We went for Tess but if we had another girl it would be Flora. All the best with your decision!

Theoldwoman · 31/10/2024 05:38

One hundred percent Tess. One of my top ten names. Also Tessa.

Flora is the spread sitting in my fridge.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 31/10/2024 07:30

I don't think that the margarine people have used the tagline "spreads easily" for 40 years!

Both lovely babes OP, I slightly prefer Tess.

WhatASadLittleLifeJayne · 31/10/2024 09:18

Also who even used margarine anymore? 😁🤭

KirstenBlest · 31/10/2024 09:47

Lots of people do, there's plenty of it for sale at my local supermarket.

urghhh47 · 31/10/2024 09:58

I prefer Tessa to Tess - as Tess feels like a nn so I would always do Tessa and nn Tess. Flora is lovely also but can't be shortened imo and runs the danger of being "flaw/floor" as a nn, which I personally wouldn't like.

Thewalrusandthecarpenter · 31/10/2024 11:21

They're both lovely names. I'm old enough to remember Sara Keays and her daughter Flora, and how poorly they were treated. I'd go for Tess.
