Hi. I like the name Ka - Lee - Ah
Like the singer Aaliyah but with a K!

Also have you heard this name before?

I don’t think the spelling solves your problem! All of the spellings could be pronounced either Kaal-ee-a or Kal-ee-a. Of all the alternatives you’ve given, I prefer Kaliya. I wouldn’t have any of the options with an ‘h’. When she’s little, you’ll tell people how it’s pronounced, and when she’s older, she will! It’s a pretty name, but not one I’ve come across.

HadEnoughOfBears · 29/10/2024 13:47

I know somebody called this, she spells it Kaleah

I think this one seems most obvious how to pronounce

RaspberryBeretxx · 29/10/2024 14:14

I think you could go with any of these depending on your preference of how it looks:
Kaliya
Kaliyah
Kalia
Kaleah

The ones with an h near the start make me want to pronounce it Kar-lee-ah and I assume you're after more of an "a" sound than "ar"? There will probably be some who instinctively pronounce it "ar" however you spell though, a bit like Nadia, Tanya etc.

Never heard of the name, and I haven't heard of the singer either so that didnt help 😅 so I'm still not sure how you want it pronounced.

I've just googled both names. Apparently Arabic? Personally I wouldn't use a name from a language that I don't have, so unless you or her family are Arabic I would find it strange to use.
That said- I think as an English speaker Kaliyah is the best one to get Ka LEE yah. The others I would have thought were K AAH lia from reading them. Like Julia but with kah instead of ju.

Otto223 · 29/10/2024 14:23

@RaspberryBeretxx This is the pronunciation I want to avoid! Kar Lee Ah is a big no for me!

yes these seems like the most obvious pronunciation! Not entirely sure if I like the H on the end though

There is no way to spell it which will guarantee the pronunciation you want (with the emphasis on the middle syllable right? So 'ka-LEE-a'?).

I teach at a school where there's a girl with a very similar name (but with a different first letter). She's in her 4th year at the school and most of my colleagues still get it wrong.

She will be correcting people for the rest of her life!

I'm not sure you can avoid that as it's just a case of people's accent. People in the south of England say Glasgow with a long a, even though every Scottish person who lives there will pronounce it with a short a (and vice versa for Bath). The names Zara, Clara and Tara will always be pronounced with a short a by Scottish people and a long a by the English. If you name your child one of those names in one country and live in the other, people will pronounce it differently. It can be the same within a country, from area to area. You can't police accents.

Trigraph · 29/10/2024 15:11

Sorry quoted the wrong this. Was the Kar-Lee-Ah reference I was talking about.

Gc1992 · 29/10/2024 15:24

I’d spell it with a double LL, probably Kalleah. This will emphasise the kall-ee-ah sound you want whereas one L (Kaleah), people may pronounce it kar-leah.

Otto223 · 29/10/2024 15:33

okay ladies thank you! I don’t think I like the name anymore 😭😭😭😂😂
I’m having boy girl twins and thinking of two names is HARD

Kalia

Most straightforward to spell and pronounce.

BarbaraVineFan · 29/10/2024 15:43

One of my friends has a daughter named this! She spells it Kahlia. But actually if she hadn't told me, I would have assumed this was pronounced KAH- Liya. For the pronunciation you want, I would go for Kaliya.

Whitewolf2 · 29/10/2024 15:51

I have a friend called Kalia, it’s pronounced as you wanted - Ka - Lee - Ah.
She’s from Greece.

user1492757084 · 29/10/2024 16:10

Try Kalleah or Kallia, Callia or Calleah.
The double L shortens the a.

I would choose Callia.

Do you like Kelly or Kellia?

Makelikeatreeandleaf · 29/10/2024 16:11

I teach a Kaaliyah.

SereneQuail · 29/10/2024 16:14

I think regardless how you spell it this is going to be a “it’s pronounced x” kind of name.
The majority of people only need telling once.

FlutteryButterfly · 29/10/2024 16:47

Kaleigha?

I know a Maleigha- pronounced Ma- lee-ah.

I love the name Callie, you could play on that, Callia ?

Kalia

Most straightforward to spell and pronounce.

I was going to say that, and I like the spelling but I would pronounce it kar Lee ah which is not what OP wants. I'm not sure how you can guarantee Ka LEE ah though. Most likely is Kaliya I think.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 29/10/2024 22:30

While Kalia looks prettiest imo, the best spelling for the pronunciation you want is likely Kahlia. This is because people sometimes spell more popular Thalia/Talia as Tahlia to get the pronunciation they want (“Tah -lee - ah”). So Kahlia is the same, just with a K.

I though it was Talia to rhyme with Tania/Tanja.

I prefer Kaliyah or Khaliyah

Jessbow · 21/11/2024 09:36

Callia or Calia = ca-lee-uh
Kallia or Kalia = CaR- lee-uh
