My partner and I have been struggling to agree on names as we both have different tastes in names. He's absolutely in love with the name emmett and I'm leaning more towards the name isaac. We're gonna wait until baby is born to see which one fits him more. Just looking middle names for both names.

Much prefer Isaac, since Emmet is a derogatory slang for “tourists” in Cornwall. Maybe not such an issue if you don’t live that way, though!

This was my first thought and I leave in the North! But that may not be an issue for you.

I think of hyacinth bucket when I think of Emmett!

Go Isaac Emmett or Emmett Isaac.

PippetyPoppetyPie · 20/10/2024 08:01

My Isaac is Isaac William

Emmet is an Irish name and popular because it can be pronounced as it is written which is handy abroad. Personally I’ve always thought it slight feminine for a boy.

OP - sorry to confuse the matter but have you considered Oran which I always think of as Emmet’s 1st cousin?

Isaac Benjamin
Emmet Christopher
Emmet Joseph

James as a middle name

Exactly what I was thinking. Something classic and one syllable.
John
George
Mark
and similar
would also all work

It’s not exactly an Irish name, in that it’s roots aren’t Irish language. It became popular in Ireland in memory of the patriot Robert Emmet who was executed in 1803.

The Irish actor Emmet Bergin died earlier this year, he was a household name in Ireland for a while.

I prefer it spelt with one t personally but that’s probably just because I’m used to it. Love Isaac too though.

I liked the name Emmet, but husband didn’t. I think Emmett with two Ts is the surname. We have an Isaac Henry. Love both your choices, don’t think you can go wrong.

Borris · 20/10/2024 20:40

Yes like others Emmet = tourists. I believe it translates to ants
