Help with baby boy names please

Sootyandsweepp · 10/10/2024 07:56

I need help from the mumsnet network and naming experts with baby boy names. They are so hard!! I’ve scrolled through 1000’s of them aimlessly and can’t decide on one.
Our surname is Pang. We like names like Zachary and Lucas but not 100%.
I like classic, traditional names which sound cool and not too cute. They can be shortened too, as need to go with our one syllable surname. I have Irish heritage and would love to give a nod to the Celtic culture, although hubby hasn’t been sold on Irish names so far. Any suggestions please.

Traditional names that I like and I think are cool are:
Jude
Rex
Seth
Edward (so many good shortening options)
William
Oliver
Samuel

Ed Pang isn't great. (Head Bang)
If you use a name that can be shortened, try the abbreviated name with the surname.
Zac Pang, Sam Pang, Tim Pang, Nate/Nat Pang, Kit Pang etc

I'd avoid Peter Smile. Patrick doesn't really go either. Tadhg is lovely but ...

Owen/Eoin
Oscar
Hugo
David

for celtic names I like tadhg, Torin, orrin, Oisin, Ivo, Lochlan, Finn, Flynn, Quinn, Caolan, Rowan, Dylan.

They are all quite classic, but not overused. I think they all go with Pang.

shoopshoopdedoo · 10/10/2024 14:54

Zachary Pang is nice.
I don’t like the name Lucas.

I was going to suggest Rory and can see others have too! Great name and works well with your surname - I think two single-syllable names can sound a bit harsh.

FayCarew · 10/10/2024 16:36

Hugo Pang is too close to 'you go bang', so I retract that suggestion.

Jessbow · 10/10/2024 23:34

needs a longer first name for avoid sounding sing song-y

Benjamin Pang
Johnathan Pang
Timothy Pang
Abraham Pang

Brendan

Four Celtic names that are not prone to being shortened.

I agree that with a one syllable surname, a one syllable name, or NN, would sound too abrupt.

Alexander is nice, Alex sounds ok too.

Elias, Mateo (but might get Mat), Elijah, Anthony.Maxton, Mannix, (though might get shortened).

William is very classic and traditional (and since it’s very timeless, seems reasonably cool). Liam is trendier/more modern and gives a nod to your Irish heritage - so William Pang, known as Liam Pang. All sorted! 😁

While I like Zachary Pang, realistically it’ll likely get shortened to Zack and I can’t decide if that sounds cool or a bit harsh 🤔, same with Lucas and the shortening Luke. Pang perhaps seems to work better with 2/3 syllable first names and diminutives.
