Spanish girls name

Which would you chose... And why?

Inés - Pronunciation issues?
Alba - Love but would need to double barrel as doesn't work with surname on its own.
Lola - Too show girl? Although does seem pretty popular in Spanish.
Vida - Short for Davida, the female of David, a family name. Really liking the links.
Sofia - Universally known, easy to pronounce. Probably the safe option.
Lucia - Means light, and she really is my light after years of infertility.

Thank you.

My niece is Lucìa, it's a lovely name.

I think Inés is popular enough that you shouldn't have many promotion issues and it's lovely.

I also like Davida, and I would put that on the BC, with a used nickname of Vida, gives her flexibility as she grows up.

Lola and Alba work less well to my very Anglicised ears. By which I mean I think they are less obviously Spanish and would probably miss some of the context around the heritage you are wanting to portray by choosing a Spanish name

Moreteaandchocolate · 30/09/2024 17:06

Inés - gorgeous! I think the pronunciation is quite straightforward and the name seems to be getting more commonly used so it will become more familiar over time.

Alba - quite nice but not my favourite of your ideas, especially as it means double barrelling it

Lola - love this - pretty and a bit fun, nice and simple to spell and pronounce

Vida - nice links and quite nice but not my favourite- I think I’d mishear it as Vita which could get annoying for her over time

Sofia - love but very overused

Lucia - gorgeous, which pronunciation would you use? I like Loo- SEE- a

SerenityNowInsanityLater · 30/09/2024 17:09

Ines and Vida are my favourites from your list.

My favorite is Lucia. I also love Lola, Alba and Ines... Alba Ines or Alba Lucia? I used to love Lola, but I agree it has too much Lolita association. You seem to love Alba, so I would go with Alba Lucia or Lucia Alba. I assume Alva isn't an option?

Comedycook · 30/09/2024 17:24

Lucia is my favourite

WandaFishy99 · 30/09/2024 17:28

Lucia, a lovely name and the meaning is perfect for your circumstances.

BronwenFrideswide · 30/09/2024 17:30

I am not going to be much help really - I like Vida/Davida it's different and lovely plus has family meaning too, but also like Lucia and the meaning of that to you.

BronwenFrideswide · 30/09/2024 17:34

The Gaelic name for Scotland is Alba and there is a political party there of that name which might be worth considering in your decision.

RuthW · 30/09/2024 17:35

Inés - lovely and easy to pronounce
Alba - not keen
Lola - Too popular in UK
Vida - lovely
Sofia - again too popular
Lucia - I would struggle with the three ways to pronounce it

OnLockdown · 30/09/2024 17:36

I think Lucia is likely to have more pronunciation issues than Ines.

I like Vida. I've never met one, even though I live in Spain.

BlackStrayCat · 30/09/2024 17:44

Lola is short for Delores meaning pain/tears.
All of them are very common in Spain.
Ines is the best.
Lucia, massively popular. Think every 5th girl.

Honestly, none of them are inspring.

Notmyfirsttimeinthismadhouse · 30/09/2024 17:47

Alba is lovely

Sofia and all the variants i believe is the most popular girls name in the world.

I love Lola but no idea how it's perceived in Spain

KirstenBlest · 30/09/2024 18:23

Are you based in Spain?

Inés - Accent will get omitted or get written as è. Like it.
Alba - If you add a hyphen and another name, she'll probably be Alba anyway. Hyphenated names aren't much liked in the UK
Lola - Too show girl, and too puppy
Vida - Livin' la vida loca
Sofia - Safe option but Sophia more popular in the UK. Both spellings overused in the UK.
Lucia - Lucy-a, Lu-see-a, Lutch-ee-a, Luth-ya, Loosha?

Inés is by far the nicest

holamuchgusto · 30/09/2024 18:30

@OnLockdown You mentioned you live in Spain - am moving there after the birth, long story. Do you happen to know what are the frequently used baby names? Tried to look for lists but very sparse. Not like UK.

Lucia seems to be out front at the moment! Have to say it's one I really like. I love both Loo-see-ah and Loo-thee-ah both common pronunciations in Spain so happy to see what is the most common pronunciation where we live and use that. Family in UK will just have to follow. It's more important it's the right pronunciation in Spain.

@KirstenBlest We will be after baby is born, and staying indefinitely.

Thanks. Then my comments about the UK don't apply.

UsernameAlreadyTaken101 · 30/09/2024 18:48

Inés and Alba are also both Scottish female names although slightly different pronunciation. Alba has been increasingly popular since the push for an independent Scotland.
Vida is also the name of a girl on a current Cbeebies show (Vida the Vet).
Sofia is very common but nice.
Lola would probably inspire older adults to burst into song - although I like it!
Lucia would.probably be pronounce with a ch by people in the UK who aren't familiar with the Spanish pronunciation

BronwenFrideswide · 30/09/2024 18:51

There are some really lovely names on that list.

Dustyblue · 30/09/2024 18:58

I used to work for a French man named Ines so that's probably skewed my thinking! It is a nice name though.

My cousin is a Lucia (Loo-see-ah) and again, wouldn't have picked it as Spanish.

No to Vida. Davida as you say is just the feminine of David. Doesn't yell Spanish to me but neither does Lola

MelodyMalone · 30/09/2024 18:59

Lucia - what you said there, about being your light, is beautiful.

OnLockdown · 30/09/2024 19:18

I see that a list of most popular names has already been posted. If you go for Lucia or Sofia, your dd is unlikely to be the only one when it's time for school.

WhereAreWeNow · 30/09/2024 19:26

How about:
Sol
Ana
Adela
Amelia
Elena
Adriana
Silvia
Marisa
Veronica

MelodyMalone · 30/09/2024 19:49

I think Marisol is very pretty. Though I only know it from Orange is the New Black 😄
