Jacob or Joel

I think I slightly prefer Jacob but it's a lot more popular. So Joel would be a bit different...

Or any other suggestions?

We liked, but I think have ruled out Miles and Sebastian. Also considered Patrick and Jesse.

Joel was my top boy name (never used as I had girls). I love it.

PuppiesLove · 25/09/2024 22:46

I love Jacob. I don't like Joel.

I also like Jonah.

beachcitygirl · 25/09/2024 22:55

@FayCarew I'm
Not religious, I only know a few religious names, and I do dislike them all, hate probably too strong a term. I had no idea Sebastian was a religious name.

PurpleChrayn · 25/09/2024 23:08

Joel.

The "-ob" sound in Jacob is nauseating.

Joel is just a weird sound as a whole

I was only teasing. I'm not keen on the current fashion for Old Testament names.

There are lots of saint names that don't seem religious - Adelaide, Rose, Lucia, Margaret, Catherine, Barbara, etc.

Names that were popular when I was born were things Mark, Michael, Andrew, Steve, Paul, Nick etc but they don't seem to be as full-on as ones like Elijah, Zachary, Malachi, Theo, Gabriel, Raphael and Nathaniel.

I love so many Old Testament names but never used them because I did feel they were a bit much, IMO. The simpler ones like Isaiah, Noah, Ezra, Jacob, etc, are easier to use and nice in their own way. If I could do it again, I might even use them, but chose not to at the time.

Thanks everyone, lots of honest opinions which is good. It's clearly very personal taste.

Jonah is an interesting suggestion, my mind jumps to Jonah and the Whale, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.

Nearly all names have religious roots. Which names do you like? Jayden / Kayden / Kylie / ABCDE?

You don't understand what Religion is and means - your posts are illogical.

In what way? @Justice4Friend .
All those names are either from the Bible or are saint's names.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 26/09/2024 16:18

Joel is more interesting imo.Jacob is so common in the schools I've worked in.

You said you didn't like religious names.
Then gave a list of names that you liked that are religious.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 26/09/2024 20:21

Joel. There are so many Jacobs now and Joel is a lovely name.

Waterboatlass · 26/09/2024 20:47

We considered Joel. It's a good decent solid name and not overly popular either.

JazbayGrapes · 01/10/2024 16:53

Jacobs are EVERYWHERE. I vote for Joel or Sebastian.

My DS is Joel. We've never had any of the strange pronunciations suggested up thread. I love his name.
