Opinion on baby girl name

Hi all,

Struggling to decide on a name for baby girl. The only name we really like is Maya (pronounced My-ah) and the surname will be Murray.

I've always liked alliterative names, do you think this sounds ok? If not, it would be good to hear what you don't like about it. Thanks!

Really like it!

Moreteaandchocolate · 18/09/2024 05:16

I love Maya. Maya Murray is very obviously alliterative, but not in a bad way - it would be a fantastic stage name!

BoleynMemories13 · 18/09/2024 06:46

It's not the best match, to my ears, but it's not terrible either. Ultimately, only you can decide whether Maya Murray feels ok to use.

What about Raya (Rye-ah)? Raya Murray is a better match.

KirstenBlest · 18/09/2024 07:51

If you like it, use it. It sounds quite memorable.
I wouldn't use Raya, Kaia, Gaia... instead of a name you love.

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 18/09/2024 07:55

I like it. The only thing with your spelling is that most people would pronounce it May-ah not My-ah so she will have a lifetime of either correcting pronunciation or spelling.

KirstenBlest · 18/09/2024 08:07

Maya usually is said as My-ah, @MrsElijahMikaelson1 .

sel2223 · 18/09/2024 10:25

Alliterative names are not my thing at all but if you like it then go for it, Maya is a lovely name

Not in my experience though 🤷‍♀️

Not in my experience though 🤷‍♀️

It may be a regional thing but I've only ever heard it as My-ah too

Spenditlikebeckham · 18/09/2024 11:57

Just spell it how you want it pronounced. Mya..

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 18/09/2024 14:20

Can be
May-ah
My-ah
Me-ah
depending on where you are and also other people with the name you know.

TomatoSandwiches · 18/09/2024 14:28

Alliterative names are for comic book characters to me but Maya Murray isn't horrible sounding at all.

KirstenBlest · 18/09/2024 14:51

I don't think anyone says Maya as Me-ah. I don't like the Maia, Mya and Myah spellings.

Shecan · 18/09/2024 14:59

I like it.

Mandarinaduck · 18/09/2024 17:56

I like alliterative names and Maya Murray flows well.

Amy106 · 18/09/2024 19:13

Lovely name!

shoopshoopdedoo · 18/09/2024 21:01

I find it really hard to say! Looks nice writen down though.

miniaturepixieonacid · 18/09/2024 21:43

I like it. It is a bit hard to say but that's not not a bad thing.

I've also only ever heard Maya as My-ah.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 18/09/2024 22:47

Lovely - reminds me a bit of Dracula’s Mina Murray (I love alliterative names as they seem more memorable and lyrical sounding). I must admit I prefer the “May-ah” pronunciation of Maya but the one you are planning on using seems the most popular, so I don’t think you’ll have that many issues.

We'd say Maya round here too

Jessieshome · 07/03/2025 09:52

I think it sounds really lovely!

okydokethen · 07/03/2025 10:24

Great name!

Emanwenym · 07/03/2025 11:08

Everyone will write it as Maya, Maia, Myah or Mia, @Spenditlikebeckham

@Sunflower8092 I'm not keen on Maya, and suspect she'll be one of several Mayas, so mostly 'Maya Murrey'
The alliteration isn't great IMO.

Not my baby though. it's not awful, and you like it.
