Torsten or other Swedish boys names

I'm 36 weeks pregnant with our second child and currently having a nightmare trying to chose a boys name (don't know sex of the baby). Girls name is sorted!
DH is Swedish so we've been looking at Swedish names just to give us more scope really.
He's really keen on Torsten but I'm not sure - what do people think? I prefer Jensen but am worried it seems a bit chavvy and maybe a bit feminine?
DD has a name which is not top 20 but common both here and Sweden, if that makes a difference.
Any opinions or suggestions very welcome - I think when you've been talking about it so much you start to lose the power of rational thought!

I think Torsten is okay, but then I am German and so quite used to the sound of the name.

How about Lars?

Blandmum · 19/04/2008 20:10

I very much like Nils and Lars... but are they too common?

All my dcs have Scandinavian names
My ds1 has a name that starts Tor...
Torsten is lovely.
Most Swedish names work well here.

emkana · 19/04/2008 20:14

How about Torben, as a slight variation.

emkana · 19/04/2008 20:15

most popular boys' names in Sweden. They are obviously not that keen on names that we consider typically Swedish

ten10 · 19/04/2008 20:17

I like Soren, Henrik, Malek and Jesper think these are Swedish (ish)
Also like Torsten and Lars

surprise · 19/04/2008 23:04

Jensen probably sounds chavvy as there is a well-known racing driver called Jensen Button (not that he's a chav, but you know what I mean). I think Torsten is okay.

FairyMum · 19/04/2008 23:08

I am Swedish. DS3 is called August.

MrsJohnCusack · 19/04/2008 23:12

Tor is cool ass a shortening
so Torsten, or Torkjell (actually I think that's Norwegian though)

lucyellensmum · 19/04/2008 23:17

I like torsten, it doesnt sound chavvy and made up, its a nice name. Jensen is nice but i think it will just be assumed you named him after jensen button or the car! and you just know that there will be a clown necklace wearing, hoop earing adorned mummy screeching jenseeeeeeeen at the top of her voice at the soft play centre! Lars is nice, i knew a lars, he was a bit gorgeous and mega intelligent, PhD, gone back to sweeden to decipher new protocols for hospital lab tests - swoon. Torsten, torsten is a great baby name and will work as a man too

msappropriate · 19/04/2008 23:23

I worked with a lovely swedish Bo once. Its probaly short for something

DrippingLizzie · 19/04/2008 23:26

Have you considered Sven? Well, I am a Man City fan...

Dragonbutter · 19/04/2008 23:29

Torsten is a lovely name.

branflake81 · 20/04/2008 07:28

Olaf? Erik? Emil?

RunningGirl · 20/04/2008 09:15

Thanks for all the opinions and suggestions. Our surname starts with an S so lots of the nice Swedish names that end in S are out, like Jens, Lars, Nils. Not keen on Sven I'm afraid although DH would love to use it!
argh! It's so difficult!

I also know a half-swedish August.

cyteen · 20/04/2008 11:16

The more I think about Torsten, the more I love it. Plus I can imagine it going well with an S surname. Go for it!

QuintessentialShadows · 20/04/2008 11:18

Jensen is originally a surname. It sounds silly as a first name, to be honest. And yes, chavvy springs to mind. (I am Norwegian, so familiar with scandinavian names)

Torsten (or Torstein) is nice, I also like Carl, or Carl-Henrik, Matias, and Marius.

3andnomore · 20/04/2008 12:51

I don't like the name at all...went to school (I am german) with some Torstens and they all were really arrogant...., don't like the sound of the name anyway though...

I have a Sven and he likes his name

I know a little Jenson here....but, the family could possibly be described as chavvy...

3andnomore · 20/04/2008 12:52

I really like Malte and Soren (can't do that o letter here, sorry)

ButterflyBessie · 20/04/2008 20:34

A second vote for Torben here

ex bf was called it
