Longer harsh baby names

StamppotAndGravy · 30/08/2024 06:32

We're stuck for inspiration. Please help!

I like quite harsh sounding baby names but DH so far isn't keen e.g.
Siân (my favourite, but rejected as common)
Margaret (boring)
Jana (our best friend)
Dana (a former colleague)

The only name he really likes so far is Juliette, but to me it's dated and fussy, plus I find Jools and July are awful. I'm going to propose Jacqueline and Annette as alternatives, but was hoping for some more ideas.

Extra complexity, we live abroad in a Germanic country. J names are pronounced with a Y or the French way, never the British way. Gs are risky pronounciation-wise. Es are pronounced A, and As are long and flat (e.g. Jana is Yaanaa, Eline is Aeleena). Most of the top hundred baby names are max 5 letters so anything fussy like Felicity will scream immigrant kid!

Thanks so much!

I live in a German-speaking country. Some names I've heard recently at the library, park, etc:

Madita
Liv
Ronja
Zoé
Aurelia
Nina
Clara
Marina
Linnea

Killian
Milan
Laurin
Philip
Bruno
Samuel
Eric
Charlie

Those are the ones that seem less common. Apart from that everywhere we go there's at least one Mila, Sofia, Luca or Leon!

StamppotAndGravy · 30/08/2024 20:36

I like Marina, thanks!

Most of my friends have Milas, Lucas and Finns too. There's an Emi (pronounced Amy) and a little girl named Marlin, which is a lovely name but I will only ever see a fish when I look at her, poor kid!

Dana (a former colleague)

Your DH doesn't like the name because it's the name of one of his former colleagues? Ugh good luck finding a name. My OH was EXACTLY like this, and we ended up with one name and one name only and no option for the other sex!

Someone above suggested Clarissa - love that name! Also Marieka.

Oh yes, there's a Finn in our street - I forgot that one. There used to be five Lucas at my daughter's nursery! They're down to two currently.

I used to go to a baby group that was very international and there were two Maxims (one with Brazilian parents, one not sure) and two Oscars ( Polish and South African).

How else is Jana pronounced other than Yaanaa?

I know a Jana. It's pronounced Jah Na
