We seem to have very similar taste!

Sebastien, Conor, Oliver and Myles are also on our list.

I don’t mind if a name is common. Much better to have a nice, common name than an awful ‘yoonique’ one in my opinion!

It depends what you mean by too common. They're not unusual.
They don't have the same vibe, IMO.
Baby names in England & Wales since 1996 (darkgreener.com) will give you an idea of how popular they are but the info stops at 2021, and only covers England and Wales.

Rory and Reuben are less trendy than Luca, but that probably means that they won't date as badly.

Lots of R names are popular, and Lucas is also very popular.

BoleynMemories13 · 28/08/2024 20:50

They're definitely not 'common', as in down market. If you mean 'too popular', everyone has a different definition of what too popular means. Some on here would definitely say they are, as all are firmly in the top 50 and Luca is top 20 now, and some people on here won't even consider names in the top 100. However, I've never really bought into this 'too popular' lark as, in my experience as a teacher, the days of 3 in a class are all but over and any name can potentially be duplicated. When I have had something duplicated, it's often been out of the top 50 anyway. There really is no rhyme or reason to it so you may as well just go for what you love.

I know a lot of Reubens.

Thinkingabouttherapy · 28/08/2024 20:54

Are you Jewish? I would say Reuben is a Jewish name and Luca sounds Italian.

@HighlandCow78 you may not care about sounding common but your DC may resent you for saddling them with a silly name like Myles…. and ‘Sebastien’ with an ‘e’ sounds pretentious for anyone without French heritage or living in France - they will spend their lives correcting people’s spelling.

Names are subjective. Thankfully most people aren’t so bigoted and do not fear spellings from other cultures. Quite a sad and pathetic attitude in this day and age.

If somebody judges a child for having a ‘pretentious’ e in their name then that says an awful lot about their own character.

Well, it is rather pretentious isn’t it?

Talk me through the reasoning behind Sebastian with an ‘e’ - what is it about the name that you like?

Rory is gorgeous! Lovely, underused name! Luca is the only one I’ve heard more than one of around me. I actually love Luke more than Luca - such a strong yet simple classic 😊

theduchessofspork · 29/08/2024 00:16

There are a lot of them - more Reubens and Lucas than Rorys I think (especially if you count in the Lucases) - check on darkgreener.

Jonah or Robert nn Robbie would be less popular options I guess.

I love Rory but underused it is not.

She’s not saying she likes Sebastien w an e, she’s saying it’s odd if you don’t have French heritage.

Reuben is no more Jewish than it is Christian. It’s extremely popular right now as is Luca.

Oh really? I don’t know any little Rorys near me. I can see it’s number 38 in the charts though - more popular than I realised! Not surprising as it’s lovely 😊
