Baby boy who will have three nationalities (Finnish, English, French). What do you think of Otso, will it work in the UK? It means bear in Finnish.

Other names on the list currently Hugo, Oscar and August.

Otso makes me think of OXO, too.

I really like Oscar, quite like Hugo (I still think of it as a “posh” name, though I know that it’s popular now), and dislike August.

ThatsNotMyNumber · 27/08/2024 17:37

Not a huge fan of Oscar but mainly because I know so many of them!

theduchessofspork · 28/08/2024 01:09

It really does sound like abrand of Kitchen appliances - a sort of Scandi minimalist rival to simple human.

So I would go for Hugo

I like the other two but August is incredibly of the moment and Oscar is very overdone

I like Otto or Oscar. I do think of Hugo as 'posh', but that may just be because my old boss was very posh and he had a son called Hugo.

BoleynMemories13 · 28/08/2024 11:14

I'm another whose first thoughts were Oxo cube or Lotso from Toy Story. I also think it'll constantly be misheard as Otto.

Your other 3 choices are much better for suiting all 3 languages. I like Oscar the best, a very international choice.

I like Otso and it's easily pronounced. It did make me think of Lotso the teddy bear though!
I like all the other names on your list, Hugo isn't particularly posh I don't think

I love the vague similarity of Otso to Fatso the Wombat.

I also love Oscar and Augustus ... and Otto makes me laugh about otto in A Fish Called Wanda.

AllTheWorldIsGreen · 29/08/2024 08:18

Are you sure? Bear is karhu in Finnish. Google Translate tells me otso means 'take it'. Otso is the Finnish name for the Duolingo bear.

DuchessOfSausage · 29/08/2024 09:31

Doesn't Arthur mean bear or bear-like? That should work as long as you are OK with the different sounds.

Otto would work in all 3 languages.

vixsta2001 · 29/08/2024 09:55

I have a half Finnish nephew called Otso! At first I was a bit Hmm but got used to if after a while, even if I had to constantly spell it to people and explain I wasn't saying oxo!!

PumpkinScarf · 29/08/2024 09:57

I also thought of Lotso Bear but I do actually like it. I think Otto would be an easier name to carry off in the UK though if that’s an option for you.

Dolliesdisasterousdayout · 29/08/2024 09:59

I do like Otso but really love Hugo and August.
Oscar isn’t my kind of name.
