Duncan

We are due our 2nd baby next month, first baby went 3 days without a name before we settled on a classic name. With the new baby DH keeps saying he really likes Duncan as a name. We are Scottish and I was at school with a few Duncan but don't know any under 20 now and I just can't make my mind up if it's hideous or not! If it was purely up to me I wouldn't consider Duncan but it does go well with our surname and our first child's name.
What are others opinions? I really don't want it to be a few days after baby is born and we don't have a name so I just give in due to exhaustion . This is a really important decision which I need to get right

I've never known a Duncan personally but I love the name because of the Paul Simon song Lincoln Duncan. Also Duncan was the surname of a favourite uni tutor of mine.

FWIW, I know a couple of young Duncans as well as older ones - and I'm in southern England so it is being used for children now. But if you don't like it, worth keeping thinking. But you may find something you are less keen on in advance feels right once you see the baby.

I absolutely love this name. All Duncan’s I have known have been so lovely and chilled . I don’t understand why anyone could think it is awful

Moreteaandchocolate · 26/08/2024 22:50

Not a favourite of mine but ok.

I quite like Duncan, even though the only one I've ever known well was a bit of a prat. That says a lot about the attractiveness of the name to me.

Be aware that if he ever gets drunk someone will call him Drunken Duncan.

RuthW · 28/08/2024 15:47

Absolutely awful. I easily going to be a Duncan. Glad I was a girl. It was awful late 60s and even worse now.

PerkyMintDeer · 28/08/2024 15:51

Back when I taught in schools, there was one infant school aged Duncan and another sixth former Duncan.

Both nicknamed Duncan Donuts.

We've now got an Uncle Duncan in our extended family. The kids unanimously (and spontaneously) refer to him as Duncan Donuts or Uncle Donuts.

It's a very weird phenomenon. We don't even have any Dunkin Donuts in our part of the UK.

Reminds me of the useless Murray brother

Coughsweet · 28/08/2024 17:31

Make the grass grow

Purplturpl · 28/08/2024 17:35

@PerkyMintDeer oh you made me glad I didn’t use it. I can imagine that would be a popular nickname

VenusClapTrap · 29/08/2024 09:06

Great name!

ZiggyZowie · 10/01/2025 09:33

I'm married to a very nice Duncan, we are Scottish

poppymango · 10/01/2025 13:30

Personally - no, I don't like it. I can't get past the fact that the first syllable sounds like "dung". There are much nicer Scottish names out there!

Sunnyflow · 10/01/2025 14:09

Awful name

I think it sounds quite guttural, it's just not a pretty name I feel. I know that sounds silly but I want a name I enjoy saying, I'm going to be saying it for the rest of my life

It’s a boy! Boys aren’t ‘pretty’ 🤣🤣🤣

It is a fab name. Strong, traditional (girls can have those attributes too of course, but boys aren’t ‘pretty’)

Skybluepinky · 11/01/2025 21:37

i don’t like it, but could be because all the ones I have known have been nasty bullies, that stank.

I agree with this and I definitely associate it with the 40+ age range

Bienemaias · 12/01/2025 09:57

Reminds me of Duncin Donuts 🍩

reichs79 · 12/01/2025 21:09
