Same name as a tv character?

I’m due twin boys late next month and put up a list of our name shortlist a few days ago.

one of our top two at the moment is Ellis. Our surname is Grey. However one commenter pointed out that Ellis Grey is a key female character from greys anatomy. I’ve never watched it so I didn’t know this.

Will the association be too much? Really love Ellis but wouldn’t like to seem like I’m naming him after a fandom or him to get made fun of.

We have other names we like but Ellis is up there.

Greys anatomy is still on and making new series. But the character Ellis is dead. However I did instantly make the connection but it wouldn't put me off. As long as you don't go Meredith or lexi I think it's fine.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 21/08/2024 17:37

@MelodyMalone nope.
Less glittery, female stage name.

mathanxiety · 21/08/2024 17:50

I agree Elliot goes better with the surname Grey.

But also agree nobody will care about the Grey's Anatomy thing.

Pieceofpurplesky · 21/08/2024 18:46

I went to school with a Tom Cruise and a Tom Jones

rentersleaf · 21/08/2024 21:41

I'm a huge greys fan so I would definitely notice and Ellis is a key character.

But unless you watch it you're unlikely to make the connection.

pamshortsbrokenbothherlegs · 22/08/2024 09:40

I wouldn't worry about this OP, the show is already old news and even fans who make the connection initially won't think about it once they know your son - I find a real like association takes over.

Also, congratulations! I've got 6mo twin boys, it's the best. 🥰

user1492757084 · 22/08/2024 10:00

I would not worry.
If you decide Ellis is out, maybe Roger would suffice.
Roger Moore, Roger Federer.. Roger, over and out.

SingingSands · 22/08/2024 10:44

Ellis Grey is a great name. Like someone upthread pointed out, you wouldn't use both names yourself (unless he'd been very naughty!) and it wouldn't be common for others to use both names together either.

And hey, it might make some old Grey's Anatomy fans smile when they hear it (I did 🙂).

But whilst on the topic... I actually live next door to a lovely elderly man called John Lennon. It hasn't done him any harm - he loves it!

DuchessOfSausage · 22/08/2024 11:02

and it wouldn't be common for others to use both names together either.
Why do posters keep saying this?

Nearly everyone I know gets referred to by both names. The only ones who are generally first name, have sufficiently unusual first names. When speaking directly to them, they're just Ellis, but they'd be Ellis Grey to most people.

Yeah, this is odd. Your friends and family aren't generally going to refer to you by your full name, but others will both at school and in the workplace.

TransformerZ · 22/08/2024 11:07

Doubt anyone under 40 has watched it never mind your kid's classmates or teachers of the future
I've seen adverts for it and it looks boring and dated
What's the other twin going to be called, Dorian? 😂

DuchessOfSausage · 22/08/2024 11:13

Dorian was a Gray. The difference in spelling would cause premature ageing-related anxiety.

DuchessOfSausage · 22/08/2024 11:19

@MelodyMalone , this is MN. As long as the first name has plenty of 'nn' options (possibly quite contrived), is 'very unique', and the middle name (usually Rose, Grace, May or James/Jay) 'flows', that's all that matters.

SaintHonoria · 22/08/2024 11:20

I've never watched the show and don't know anyone who has. I don't think it's anything to worry about.

Alice Cooper? Awesome name if it is!

Spidey66 · 22/08/2024 16:16

Never seen it, so don't know the reference. I think it will be fine. Its hardly on a scale with Phil Mitchell or Bart Simpson, is it?

Ellis is a lovely name.

Normallynumb · 22/08/2024 16:20

It's an old show now, plus the character is female so go ahead and use it
Ellis is a lovely name
Have you chosen your other twin boys name? I'm just really interested in names!

Newbornhaze · 16/10/2024 17:46

Hope you are doing well OP! Where did you land on the name?

alongtimeagoandfaraway · 16/10/2024 17:52

When my daughter was born her name was similar to a very famous male actor reversed. Eg actor ‘James Rosen’, daughter ‘Rose James’. We loved the name and decided that by the time she was an adult, people would no longer make the connection.
They didn’t. It was never an issue.

Is someone proposing to name a baby The-Man-From-DelMonte?

Reverse the 2 parts of the last word, we knew someone with that name. So when a child on a register they might have been addressed tge same way round as the last word
