I love Fran short for Francis.

Fran is fine, especially if you want him to grow up to be a Nanny. Frannie is another you could use.

I prefer Frank, personally, and like it as a registered name or as a nick name for Francis or Franklin.

I know two Frans and both are men whose full name is Francis. I would consider it to be a male name

Is this supposed to be a homophobic slur?

If you don't like Francis, Frank or Francesco, don't call your child one of those names. Almost all the Frans (Healy included) are Francises on their BC. Saint Francis of Assisi is so wonderful (even to some atheists!) that it's a lovely name to give a boy. Not such a great name for the playground so Fran is better. Fran really is mostly a girl's name.

It can be a boys or girls name . I know a Spanish Fran who is male

WorriedRelative · 18/08/2024 09:13

I'd go for Francis and then shorten it to either Fran or Frank as you like.

Nannyfannybanny · 18/08/2024 09:18

No, girls name. Why is MN so obsessed with nicknames, which have to be a certain shortening of the real name. Do people call their babies, young children by both. My parents gave me the shortest name,so it couldn't be shortened. My DKs never had their names shortened either.

ApolloandDaphne · 18/08/2024 09:28

It can be either.

Sweetteaplease · 18/08/2024 09:31

Fran is a horrible sounding name, plus a girls name. Just no.

junebirthdaygirl · 18/08/2024 09:36

Fran can definitely be a guys name..short for Francis. If you call him Francis then can shorten in many ways. Fran is common enough in lreland and l don't know one single female Fran.

I have heard of it as a man’s name but would normally think of a girl but I don’t see any reason why it couldn’t be used for a boy.
I know of Franny as a boys name

How about Fanny for a boy!

isthismylifenow · 18/08/2024 09:37

Of course it's fine. Short for Francois. I know more than one male Fran.

The only people I know called Fran are blokes. It's fairly common to shorten Francis to Fra but I'm in NI so I suppose it depends where you are.

dbeuowlxb173939 · 18/08/2024 10:43

As a nickname for Frank I think it's fine (I wouldn't put Fran on birth certificate for a boy)

Janedoe82 · 18/08/2024 10:46

Common for men in Ireland as short for Francis. Fra also popular

Sorry: it’s my sense of humour.
