Iris is one of my absolute favourite girls names. Lydia and Alice have also been on my own list over the years.

So I vote Iris, Alice or Lydia, in that order.

Theoldwoman · 03/08/2024 15:00

Great list.

Alice is my top girls name now, has been for ages.

Also love Emily, Nina, Zara, Sophia and Eve.

Depends on middle name, any siblings, and surname.

Ihatemondays1962 · 03/08/2024 15:03

I am not keen on martha, molly or Merryn but really like the rest.

raspberryberet7 · 03/08/2024 15:25

raspberryberet7 · 03/08/2024 15:26

I don't know any Merryn's at all. Or any Eve's though I know plenty of Evelyn's, Evie's and Eva's.

You'll not be sick of hearing it then! I'm in Scotland maybe they are more popular here than where you are

Mammyloveswine · 03/08/2024 15:31

I think Emily is such a lovely classic name! All my dolls were called Emily!

I also love Eleanor and Esme.

I love Iris too!

anonhop · 03/08/2024 15:35

Similar to our names. Also LOVE Merryn but DH concerned it's too unknown...

Firsttimebabymummy · 03/08/2024 16:12

Emily- love. Classic
Martha- I don't think the sound of this, sounds dated not in a good way
Alice- love. Classic
Merryn- don't like
Molly- don't like
Nina- it's OK but prefer your others
Sophia- I like this.
Zara - it's ok but prefer your others
Eve- not keen
Lydia- love.
Iris- I like it

My favourites are Emily, Lydia and Alice (in that order)

Emily and Lydia were on my own list.

FayCarew · 03/08/2024 16:54

Top list, in order:
Alice - like
Martha - ok, slightly frumpy, Arthur is popular
Lydia - like. Not keen on Lyds. Like Lydie

Maybe:
Emily - ok but seems a bit overused
Nina - ok, seems bit current
Iris - ok, quite placid sounding. Nce flower

Know too many:
Molly - ok, slightly twee
Zara - nice but I know loads of them
Eve - nice but Evies are everywhere
Sophia - overused. I like Sophie.

No
Merryn - don't like it

Emily and Lydia were on my own list.

I agree with these comments except that I’d put Alice at the top.

Martha always makes me think of the housemaid in Secret Garden - not that she wasn’t lovely. And Molly sounds like a nickname and a doll ( I think maybe some weird association with the Miss Molly had a dolly song!)

I’m not a great fan of Nina and Zara, and Merryn to me is entirely different in feel from the rest of the list. Love the rest!

BobbyBiscuits · 03/08/2024 17:14

I like Iris a lot. I prefer Sophie to Sophia.
The others I'm not crazy on I'm afraid.

Berlinlover · 03/08/2024 17:24

I love all those names except Iris.

Spidey66 · 03/08/2024 17:26

Not keen on Merryn, but the rest are lovely ☓

ComealongMartha · 03/08/2024 17:29

I’m a Martha and have an Alice and Sophia! 😂

Obviously I love my girls names but also love Zara and Nina.
Lots of Merryns where I live. It’s not my cup of tea.

LimesOfBronze · 03/08/2024 17:41

Merryn is the only Cornish name I like! It’s in my top 10 hypothetical baby girl names.

TemuSpecialBuy · 03/08/2024 17:43

Not keen on martha or molly.

Weirdly feeling Nina!
Its a cool name and prob due a comeback...

shoopshoopdedoo · 03/08/2024 18:51

I like them all!
Alice, Emily and Nina are my favourites.
I prefer Sophie to Sophia.
Molly and Merryn probably would be my last two picks from the list.

Sleepnplay · 03/08/2024 19:18

I love Nina, Zara, Eve and Lydia, all were on our list. Also like Iris a lot, and Emily is nice too.

Moreteaandchocolate · 03/08/2024 19:30

Lovely list!! It’s rare I like all the names on a list!
I absolutely love Alice - that’s my favourite.
I also love - Martha, Iris and Eve.
I really like all the others.

BeautyPageantDropout · 03/08/2024 19:33

Emily - hate this name so much, bland and boring. hate it.
Martha - could be dowdy on one person but elegant on another
Alice - bit dull but okay
Merryn - pretty
Molly - like
Nina - like
Sophia - so many of them about. I always want to pronounce it with a strong New Jersey accent 'yo sophiiiiiiiiia'
Zara - pretty
Eve - pretty but overdone
Lydia - like
Iris - not a massive fan

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 03/08/2024 20:52

Emily - 7th choice, another absolute classic that’s relatively timeless, and another very safe option but there are just others I like the sound of better.
Martha - 11th choice, never understood the love for this as it sounds dreary/drudge like
Alice - 4th choice, absolute classic, pretty timeless and definitely the “safe” option.
Merryn - 9th choice, pleasant enough, feels less classic than your other picks.
Molly - 10th choice as I’m generally not keen on nickname style names.
Nina - 3rd choice, simple, yet feminine and elegant plus surprisingly underused. I’m just not sure if I prefer more classic but similar Anna? 🤔
Sophia - 6th choice, beautiful and fab meaning but I think having so many of them (when you include all the Sophie/Sofia’s too) has spoilt it a bit.
Zara - 5th choice, pretty and simple with a slightly exotic feel. I just personally prefer similar Lara or Sara more.
Eve - 1st favourite and on my own girls list .Gorgeous, elegant and simple - but a funky palindrome too. Only concern is the myriad of other Ev- names that might be in her class too 😢
Lydia - 2nd choice and again on my list, beautiful, classic and elegant yet with a slightly quirky feel
Iris - 8th choice, gorgeous imagery in the flower and goddess, I just think it has a slightly harsh sound.

Quite a few your choices were on my own girls list, nice picks! ( I also had Anna, Elizabeth, Claudia, Antonia, Verity, Lara and Isabel on it if it’s of any interest).

Actually Antonia is a good call and ready for a revival.
