Isabelle

It seems like Isabelle/Isabella is everywhere at the moment but it's the only name I'm absolutely in love with for DD2 who is due imminently. DD1 is Robyn but we tend to call her Bobbie, I love that both her name and nickname are known but not overly popular. Any suggestions for any other names that I might like?

Apologies, I definitely read it like you were saying it was a big no for this reason.

If we're going to lump all the Isabelle/Isabella variations together, you'd have to do the same for all the Sophie/Sophia spellings, all the versions of Lily (and the similar Lila), the Evie/Eva/Evelyn names, Amelia/Emilia etc. Then you have all the Ellie/Ella/Eleanor/Eloise/Elodie type names, plus all the variations of the arabic names (of which there are usually loads of different versions). The stats would indeed look different if we lumped all the similar names and their variations together, but I don't think it's as straightforward as saying Isabelle would be number 1 because of all the variations.

Yes, very true!

Just coming back to this thread to ask for more inspiration. DH has completely gone off Isabelle and we have now made a list of 3 names that we each like but don't love, any suggestions of one we might not have thought of!?

DH- Indie, Erin, Hattie
Me- Heidi, Imogen, Harriet

I realise we have one "match" there but neither of us are completely in love with Harriet/Hattie

DH- Indie, Erin, Hattie
Me- Heidi, Imogen, Harriet

Out of those my favourite is Hattie (although I would have it as a nickname for Harriet) and my least favourite is Imogen.

Erin, Indie and Heidi are all quite boring. They remind me of an 80’s teenager wearing a velvet alice band.

Pemba · 23/07/2024 15:03

Imogen is beautiful, and more unusual than Isabelle.
I do quite like Harriet though.

Indie is one of my pet hate names, it's a bit ridiculous imo. 'indie' music etc, shouldn't really be a name.

Heidi is OK, possibly a bit cutesy. , Erin meh, it's OK.

You have better taste than your partner, and you'll be the one giving birth!

That’s a shame about Isabelle, but it’s important to have a name you both like. As someone with similar taste, other names I considered were:

Alice (I really wanted this but DH didn’t)
Lara
Kate
Jessica
Francesca
Felicity
Anna
Charlotte
Emmeline
Grace
Abigail
Jasmine
Jemima

Our older daughter is called Matilda.

In my experience, unless you’re looking for something totally left field, chances are if you’ve been thinking about names for a while, you’re probably not going to come across a new name that you’ve not thought of before at this point. It might be more a case of “thinking differently” about names, rather than trying to discover a new one. That’s what we found when we were trying to decide anyway!

Two teens - Isabel variant names second only to Eve variant names in terms of popularity. Every friend group has an Izzy or Evie. They are the equivalent to Claire/Rachel/Sarah/Vicky in the 80s. If this bothers you definitely avoid. I would want something more special myself.

muddyford · 23/07/2024 15:41

I love Isobel. How about Hester, if you like Harriet?

EdithGrantham · 23/07/2024 18:34

Thanks all, especially @Pemba who agrees I have better taste than DH 😁 I'm definitely going to have to think differently about names we've already come across I think, will let you know when we make a decision!

I know 2 children with the name. If it's what you like then go for it!

FWIW I love the sound of Robyn and Harriet - Bobbie and Hattie. They sound like they would be very cool sisters.

In Scotland a nickname for Isobel is Tib or Tibby. About 100 years ago there was a lot of Tibbys as Isobel was very popular.

Just call her Isabelle. You love it.

Agreed. It's a beautiful name.

EdithGrantham · 26/07/2024 20:14

Thanks all, we've gone for Harriet and Isabelle as a middle name. Still agree that Isabelle is beautiful but now she's here she's definitely a Hattie!
