Cousins with similar names

Hi all!

i am expecting a baby boy and me and my partner have fallen in love with the name Evan, we’ve been using it to address bump and everything.
however, it randomly popped up in my head that my husband has a nephew called Ethan (they will be first cousins) and now I can’t get it out of my head how similar they sound.
I raised it with hubby but he doesn’t think it’s a problem at all.
I’ve tried to stay open to finding a new name but nothing sounds as good as Evan does to me now.
what do you think? Is it too similar?

for context, we only see Ethan about once or twice a year and his mum and dad are pretty laid back. I’m more worried about what the rest of the family will think. EG, grandad who would have two grandsons called Ethan and Evan.

To me the two names don't sound thst similar I'd stick with Evan if you really want to its a lovely name. I was going to name my now 18year old daughter Kelsey but changed my mind as she has a cousin named Chelsey which sounded ridiculous as she saw a lot of her cousin when she was younger. I'm glad i didn't as Michelle suits her much better

I have four male cousins with the same exact name, all named in honour of my dad, their uncle, and one female cousin with the feminine version of my dad's name, and her nn is the same nn the males have.

No one cares.

Heavenlyhoumous · 25/06/2024 18:04

It's fine. We have a Joseph and a Joey and no-one thought anything of it.

Julimia · 25/06/2024 18:09

Not an issue is it. Im sure you have other things worth worrying about.... just go for it,you like it end of.

BoswellTheScribe · 25/06/2024 18:36

Completely fine.
Ethan starts with an eee sound and Evan with an eh sound. Yes they both end with an n but they aren’t too similar to be a problem I’m sure.

olympicsrock · 25/06/2024 18:41

In our family there are cousins the same age with the same first and surname . Fathers are brothers.
Thank god not in the same town!
Your example will be fine

Emmz1510 · 25/06/2024 19:18

I think it’s fine. Not too similar

I've three cousins and an uncle with the same name, and one of my brothers though he goes by his middle name (but not because he shared the first with a cousin).

clearwaterrising · 25/06/2024 19:30

I have two cousins who both share the same name. It's never been an issue.
Ethan and Evan are different names - no problem at all

Theladybirdthatheard · 25/06/2024 19:59

I know brothers called Ethan and Evan. Perfectly fine for cousins.

TiredParentAlways · 25/06/2024 20:22

Not sure how you say those names but they sound completely different to me. They only seem similar when written down in my opinion.

Xmasdaft2023 · 25/06/2024 20:26

Non issue! Love the name Evan

1984Winston · 25/06/2024 20:56

I have nephews called Evan and Ethan (they aren't cousins though, different sides of the family) they are similar but honestly I don't think it matters at all

Mh67 · 25/06/2024 21:30

My son and cousin have the same 3 names. There dare of birth is the same day and month as well just different years

marie54321 · 25/06/2024 22:31

My cousin has a child with the same name as my child, exactly the same spelling. We don’t see my cousin very often (weddings and funerals) So I figured it wouldn’t matter.
I don’t see it as being any different to them having a child in their nursery or class with the same name.

Safaribar · 25/06/2024 22:47

My gran and her two cousins all were called after their gran. So all three had the same first and middle name! I don't think Evan and Ethan are too similar, different sound at the beginning.

NotSentFromIphone · 25/06/2024 22:53

Not an issue, it's not even the same name so shouldn't cause any confusion.

I'm researching my family tree just now and one generation has 5 cousins all called James from 5 brothers so even cousins with the same name isn't really a biggie either.

jazzhands84 · 25/06/2024 23:04

My brother and our cousin have exactly the same name, even down to the middle name. It's never caused an issue to the best of my knowledge!

Linux20 · 25/06/2024 23:51

Not the same but my cousin got married to a girl with the same name as his sister, his wife took his surname. So my uncle and aunt have a d and a dil with the same first and last names.

Evanandjoesmum · 26/06/2024 05:56

It's a great name! I would say that though....

My Evan sometimes gets called Ethan or Ewan by people who cba to read properly anyway Hmm

They have a cousin James, v similar to Evan's brother Jonas but it bothers no one! Congrats on your baby

jannier · 26/06/2024 08:21

There are 3 James in my family between cousins and now a boyfriend not a problem

yikesanotherbooboo · 26/06/2024 09:45

Evan and Ethan have different origins so , to me , they aren't similar apart from a vaguely biblical air . It would be akin to cousins named James and Joshua.

Footle · 26/06/2024 09:46

We have Josephs the way some people have mice.

Ablar · 26/06/2024 12:15

I know a brother and sister called Taylor and Tyler with almost identical middle names too. I wouldn't worry

mrsDracoMalfoy · 26/06/2024 14:50

I know of a brother and sister called Louise and Lewis.

I think cousins Ethan and Evan are safe.
