Miri as standalone name

MumtobeJul24 · 14/06/2024 08:11

Expecting first baby soon.

DH and I both love Miri as a name but none of the longer versions.

Does it work as a standalone name? I think it does and keen to use, husband not so sure.

thanks

I think it's a lovely name.

Dinosaurpoo · 14/06/2024 18:39

Miri isn’t just sounds put together like pp said!
In Welsh it means merriment / fun and is often used as a girl’s name.
its perfectly fine as it is. Or lovely as a nickname for Miriam etc.

ApricitySeeker · 14/06/2024 18:45

I know of 2 little Miris. One is Mirabelle and one is Miriam. I’d say it’s fine as a stand-alone name but you will probably get a lot of people asking you what it’s short for!

timetorefresh · 14/06/2024 18:46

I thought this was about MRI scans for a minute

salamithumbs · 14/06/2024 19:09

I like it! Either as a stand alone name or as a nickname for Mirabel or Miranda. The only time I've heard the name Miri is in Back to Life

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 14/06/2024 21:39

If I heard Miri I would think it's a short version of a longer Indian name

yumyumyumy · 15/06/2024 03:33

I agree with another poster that it sounds like a contraceptive

EasternEcho · 15/06/2024 05:16

It sounds incomplete, and also as PPs have said, like a contraceptive. My first thought was also that creepy child in Star Trek. I think a person with that name would spend a considerable amount of time during their life answering the question "so what's Miri short for"?

knitnerd90 · 15/06/2024 06:05

Miri as a nickname for Miriam is fairly common amongst Jewish women/girls and hence would be my first assumption, being from that culture.

PrincessOfPreschool · 15/06/2024 07:01

This is so strange. I was, just yesterday, talking to DD about her name. I once met someone called Miri and absolutely loved the name. When pregnant, many years later, I really wanted her to be Miri so I gave her a name which could be shortened to Miri. When we talked yesterday, DD was so surprised as somehow, she didn't end up with the Miri nickname! She's either her full name or a different nickname (given by her then 2 year old brother).

So, please, just call her Miri. It's really lovely.

MartyFunkhouser · 15/06/2024 07:03

I love it. I’ve only ever heard it on that tv show which I can’t remember the name of.

Miriam is a bloody awful, dreary name. You don’t have to go for a longer version.

localnotail · 15/06/2024 07:12

Sounds a bit like Siri, or any other generic brand name.

Mwnci123 · 15/06/2024 07:28

Miri is a name (not diminutive) in Welsh. I like it.

PurBal · 15/06/2024 07:31

Yes, I know one.

buma · 15/06/2024 07:32

I love it!!

LittleMissSleepyUK · 15/06/2024 07:34

I like it. I really dislike Miriam but Miri is quite sweet

ZenNudist · 15/06/2024 07:36

Awful. Fine as a nn for Miriam. Sounds like a sister voice assistant to Siri

ZenNudist · 15/06/2024 07:37

Or just call her Mary. That's a great name. Similar sound.

NoTicket · 15/06/2024 07:38

The Miri I know is shortened from Miriana (Italian) which is lovely

KirstenBlest · 15/06/2024 12:12

Is it really a name, @Mwnci123? It makes me think of Miri Mawr.
It comes up on Darkgreener.

Edited

I know a Miri. Only the one though, so maybe it's a stretch.

KirstenBlest · 19/06/2024 23:55

I think of it a meaning Mirth, so it seems a bit strange, but it's a happy sounding name.

Sparklybutold · 20/06/2024 05:05

To close to Myra.

MumtobeJul24 · 22/06/2024 08:14

Thanks for your comments everyone.

do you think Marianne could go to Miri or is that too much of a jump?

I know two little girls called Miri, both families are Welsh speaking. It's a lovely name, meaning happy / joyful.
