Names like Betty?

Have made 2 threads in a row, sorry about that, but at least they are mostly different topics!

I really want to use the name Betty but I can't, so I was wondering if there are any names with the same feel? Not necessarily nicknamey names, but just the feel of them. Can't use any Rose names, and I like Beth but not as much as Betty, there's just something so sweet about it.

Also no longer forms of Betty that I can shorten, because I just can't call her Betty at all (even as a diminutive) TIA!

Thank you all so much! I just thought of Wendy which I think gives such Betty energy but I don't think it goes with Rosalie and Cecilia so I won't use it sadly, but I think right now I'm most likely going to go with Eloise nn Elsie, but I still love Dorothea and Marjorie. Marjorie will be the middle name of not the first, and Dorothea Marjorie sounds fine but not sure about Eloise Marjorie. I like it written down but not so much spoken, but then again it has family meaning and I'd likely only see it written down anyways. Maybe Eloisa Marjorie might sound nicer but I think I like Eloise more. Thank you all for your help!

Two friends with children with the same name becomes confusing, Which one is being shouted on, which one is being spoken about.

One of my brothers' and one of my sisters' managed fine. 😂

Also there a lots of names that sound similar. 3 of my other nieces have similar sounding names and are the same age group.

Dottie. Kitty. Lottie. Dolly. Elsie

AmberGuide · 03/06/2024 15:52

Ok see I've changed my mind again although I love Eloise, I can't commit to it because I love other names as much. This is my shortlist:

Rosalie, Cecilia, Josette (Josie)
Rosalie, Cecilia, Dorothea (Dotty, Thea, Dory)
Rosalie, Cecilia, Eloise (Elsie)
Rosalie, Cecilia, Marjorie (Jorie, Rory)
Rosalie, Cecilia, Dahlia (Dolly)

And on the similar name as a friend thing, I'd probably do it if the name was just similar, but it's the exact same name. I like Betsy, but it's a similar thing to Beth where I'd just be wishing I called her Betty the whole time.

Wishhhh I could use Ophelia/Effie or Cordelia/Cora/Cory/Dolly but Ophelia and Cordelia are both too rhymey with Cecilia. Dahlia might be as well but I love it so much! This is so hard. Might just give DH the list and let him pick.

@AmberGuide big vote for josette. Goes so well with your other names

HolyMoly24 · 03/06/2024 16:00

What about Norah? Similar vintage vibe to Betty.

I have a little Norah and I find that most people love her name

HolyMoly24 · 03/06/2024 16:18

Or Juniper nn Junie. So cute!

Amdone123 · 03/06/2024 16:40

Dahlia is lovely, as is Juniper

DemBonesDemBones · 03/06/2024 16:57

Josette is the nicest by a mile!

Theoldcuriosityshop · 03/06/2024 17:08

Elsie is a name in its own right, not a nn for Eloise which is a beautiful name. What is this obsession for nicknames, I deliberately chose names that couldn't be shortened etc.

mewkins · 03/06/2024 17:10

Eliza, Nancy, Nina, Kitty/Kit, polly, Penny, Louise, Phoebe, Zoe, Laura, Alice, Florence, Olive.

All feel similar to Betty to me. I think you're trying yourself in knots looking for a name that can be shortened (so trying to find two names you love) which is making it trickier.

Wallabyone · 03/06/2024 17:25

Some lovely names here! I even like Marjie for Marjorie. How about Jeanie-I love Jean.

ItsReallyOnlyMe · 03/06/2024 17:30

If you already have a Rosie then I'm not sure about having a Josie as well.

Edith - Edie
Colette/Greta - Etta
Francesca - Frankie

MumofSpud · 03/06/2024 17:35

I wanted Betty for my cat, DD wanted Bessie so we compromised- Betsy!

Nannyfannybanny · 03/06/2024 17:40

Betty, I can only see Frank Spencer,"some Mothers Do 'ave them". Why does everyone on MN have to have a name you can shorten/nickname. Folk I know in real life, family, friends, Richard is Richard, robin is robin .

FawnDrench · 03/06/2024 19:41

Victoria - Vicky

OnLockdown · 03/06/2024 23:09

Jeannie, Effie, Willa, Emmy

Civilservant · 03/06/2024 23:11

Margaret / Daisy or Meg

HH96 · 03/06/2024 23:29

I feel like Elsie wouldn't stick as a nn for Eloise. I had a friend called Eloise and she had nearly no nn's except completely obscure ones that weren't really names. She had El and Squigg.

Dorothy or Dorothea / Dotty
Matilda / Tilly
Penelope / Penny
Margaret / Maggie or Peggy
Josephine or Josette / Josie

ODFOx · 03/06/2024 23:42

Betty-adjacent is harder than I expected!
Fenella (Nelly)
Mary (Molly or Polly)
Bridget (Bridie)
Harriet (Hattie)
Patricia (Pattie)
Henrietta (Hettie)

But I think Harriet/Hattie is the most Betty adjacent.
