Pronounced Deena

What do you think of it?

I was just thinking about a little girl that I used to babysit in Spain. She was called Dina.
I've never heard it since. I thought it was such a lovely name

It's Dina Carroll & Dinah Washington right?

Edited

Yep. Love them both actually so now I need to go and listen to both!

apparently Dina Carroll is actually Geraldine

Dina sounds lovely, and the name has a positive vibe for you.
Dina
Geraldine - Dina
Delfina - Dina

Do you like..
Edwina

I know a 5yo called Dina, she is the sweetest little girl. Love the name.

Dee51121 · 22/05/2024 23:09

My cat is called Deena, feel it really suits her and has great nickname options, so I'm very fond of it as a name.
Correcting spelling may always be an issue, but that's the case for a lot of names.

CountingCrones · 22/05/2024 23:12

Dina is lovely.

longdistanceclaraclara · 22/05/2024 23:16

Reminds me of starlight express, the diner car.

mathanxiety · 23/05/2024 02:31

I like it.

I know two Russian women of this name. (Pronounced Deena).

HAF1119 · 23/05/2024 08:42

I like it, and I'd have assumed it was pronounced like 'Deena' :)

Thecomfortador · 23/05/2024 15:58

There was a Dina Kotchetkova, Russian gymnast from the 1990s. I like it.

SherrieElmer · 23/05/2024 16:03

Ghastly.

It sounds like dinosaur.

mathanxiety · 23/05/2024 16:06

Actually there is a local TV journalist named Dina around here too (again pronounced Deena, like Tina).

mathanxiety · 23/05/2024 16:08

It sounds like dinosaur.

Maybe you're thinking of the name 'Dinah'?

Or maybe you pronounce dinosaur 'deenasaur'?

SonicTheHodgeheg · 23/05/2024 16:09

I would assume that it was pronounced Deena because of the names Tina, Lina, Mina, Gina, Nina etc

I’m not the biggest fan but it’s ok.

ladygindiva · 23/05/2024 16:10

Lovely name. I know a Deanna, pronounced Deena, if you think the spelling will be an issue ( it won't but MN is full of people weirdly obsessed with how names are spelt or pronounced; I have an oddly spelt traditional name and it really really isn't a problem. MN is a strange place)

moonshinepoursthroughmywindow · 23/05/2024 16:10

I would have expected the Deena pronunciation as I've heard of Dina Carroll. It's not quite my thing, but I think it's a perfectly valid name and shouldn't cause too much confusion.

merrymelodies · 23/05/2024 16:20

I know a woman with this name and she is ghastly. Hard as nails and, when riled, a human T. Rex. So no, I don't like it.

MadKittenWoman · 23/05/2024 16:27

VeraForever · 19/05/2024 21:00

Dina is a nickname. I wouldn't have it as a first name.

Dina is a real name. The male version in Italy is Dino; it is not pronounced like dinosaur.

WatchOutMissMarpleIsAbout · 23/05/2024 16:33

The Dina’s I know (Greek) full name is Christina. In Greek the letter T is pronounced as a D.

ThereAreNoSloesOnThere · 23/05/2024 16:34

I like the 'Deena' version more than the 'Dinah' sort of one. But for some reason don't really like it much at all.

I do like the pp suggestion of Delfina nn Dina though. Not sure why I like that way though when the outcome is still the name Dina.

Guess not sure all round really!

But I named my older child a name that is really panned on MN and he's 14 now and I still love it. So i say if you love it, then you love it and go for it.

greengreyblue · 23/05/2024 16:35

It’s lovely. Have you read The Red Tent? That’s where I first heard it. Very old biblical name. It’s pronounced Deena.

WatchOutMissMarpleIsAbout · 23/05/2024 16:41

Ahh I love the Red Tent! Fabulous book.

greengreyblue · 23/05/2024 17:09

Oops sorry it was actually Dinah. I read it as Deena though.
