What boys names do you love that you are surprised are not more popular?

Winston. Great name. Sadly ruled out for us as we live near a famous brothel of the same name!

Gavin. Great name. Long overdue a comeback.

I love the name Matthew. I know it's still used but it's fallen out of the top 100 now. To me, I'd rank it with names like James, Thomas, Alexander and William in terms of how classic it feels, and yet this one has fallen right away while they all still reign supreme in and around the top 30.

Peter too. The popularity of Peter Rabbit makes it still seem so fresh to me but clearly, judging by the stats, most people disagree!

Christopher is another gorgeous classic I'm surprised is no longer in regular use.

For girls, Anna and Victoria are both incredibly classic and international so I'm surprised they're no longer top 50 popular (especially when you see some of the names which are).

Robert. Would have been my choice had we had boys. I like how versatile it is - Bob, Bobby, Rob, Bertie etc

It goes to show tastes vary, I have to admit I’ve read some of these (Gideon, really??) and am surprised anyone would use it at all 😂

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 13/05/2024 21:26

Agree with Matthew. I think it’s lovely in its full name but my age group is full of Matt’s which isn’t as nice so maybe that’s what went wrong. Hopefully it comes back as as a standalone name.

I hear ya, but for some reason I love that name! Although if i did have a boy i would have called him Guy wishing i had the guts to call him Gideon

Are all classic names I love that are outside the top 100

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 14/05/2024 23:45

Nathaniel - very timeless ( in that it’s classic with a rich history but you’d have no idea how old a Nathaniel was), well known, but it’s never made the Top 100. If it wasn’t that I’m not as keen on the invariable diminutive Nate, I’d consider it the perfect boys name.

SplodgeOfCustard · 17/05/2024 11:41

I like Gideon. Just looked at the bottom of the statistics, I like Guy, Jerome and Vince. I have always loved Clive, but fully accept i am in the minority there.

The school my kids are at is around 50% Asian (Chinese, Korean, Taiwanese and some Japanese) and amongst this group there is a smattering of Jonathan, Nathanial, Winston, Daniel, Matthew and then we also have Quintus, Ron x2, Alan, David, Walton, Bob, a number of Richards, and amongst the girls some lovely 90s names like Natasha, Jessica, Vanessa, Abigail and about three Claires too.

I guess they’re naming on what is a nice sounding name, with none of the social history which goes with them.

I don't like it. Vincent is not too bad but Vince and Vinnie are awful. Quentin - seriously? It's dreadful.
Nathaniel is OK but too long with only Nat or Nate as usual shortenings.
I quite like Clive.

What's wrong with names like Mark, John, Peter, Andrew, Matthew, Jeremy, Jason, Simon, Timothy, Malcolm, Duncan, Paul etc?

I like Winston. Guy is fab. Would use Michael but it's already been used.

MerryMarys · 22/08/2024 14:23

We have a 15 year old Quentin and have had really positive reactions! Perhaps people are just being polite Wink

I also love the names Christopher and Winston - all due a comeback imo.
