Hello!

We are currently choosing a name for our first daughter and we have narrowed it down to Lara and Amber.

Is Lara a suitable name for England in your opinion?

I would appreciate any feedback you have on the names.

Thanks in advance

Lara

Dd was almost called Amber. As you can guess, I favour Amber.

Lara is too Lara Croft. Of course you could equally say Amber is Amber Heard.

No one if the child's generation will know about Lara Croft!

Amber just seems a bit less classy than Lara IMO

Other names along those lines that are nice....

Lucia
Lila
Eloise
Clara
Ella
Mila
Flora

Love these too.

I don’t like either but prefer Lara of the 2. What about Lyla?

Like,
I'd never call my daughter Myra - Myra Hindley.
Or even Lucy now - (Lucy Letby)

Again, I get that. I was just confused why the OP was only questioning the 'suitability' of one name over the other, as if there was something about that specific name that they knew that I didn't. I was genuinely asking why they felt that particular name may be unsuitable in case I myself had missed something.

I totally understand someone not knowing how names would be perceived in a country they're not native too. I was just confused why only one of the names was being questioned as it suggested there may be something specifically wrong with Lara, rather than a general query about how both names are perceived here.

It was just a question, no biggy...

I get that. I just wondered why Lara's 'suitably' was being questioned over Amber. Not that there's anything wrong with either, but both are in regular usage over here so I can't see any reason why one would be considering more 'suitable' than the other. I guess I just found suitable a strange term as it suggests there may be something wrong with it.

Definitely nothing wrong with Lara OP, it's in and around the top 100 so is well used here.

@BoleynMemories13

maybe the OP knows an Amber
& is already confident about it? Who knows? I just found your comment unnecessary & unkind 🤷🏻‍♀️

habitineedrightnow · 25/04/2024 07:55

Lara is very popular on Mumsnet, it's a perfectly fine usable name.
I really like Amber, lovely nature connotations, easy to spell and pronounce, well known without being too popular.

Wow, I'm bewildered how you can think me asking why someone feels something may be unsuitable (a genuine question, I was trying to think myself why on Earth it wouldn't be) is unkind. Had I said "of course it isn't unsuitable, don't be so bloody ridiculous" of course that would be unnecessarily unkind. I asked why it wouldn't be. I was genuinely curious!

I've seen some damn right unkind comments on here from time to time and I would never go out of my way to make one myself. You really are reading to much into it. As I said, I asked a question as I was genuinely interested in the answer. No biggy. Why do you need to make more of it than it is? Quite ironic really considering you're branding someone else 'unkind'. What a strange way to twist someone's words...

I have no idea what you mean by 'is Lara a suitable name in England?' Why on Earth wouldn't it be?

Lara is gorgeous. I much prefer it to Amber.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts! Just to clarify, I don't have an English background, but my husband does. We're considering both Lara and Amber for our daughter's name, and we're trying to find one that resonates with both of our backgrounds.

Thank you all for your helpful input! After considering your feedback and discussing with my husband, we've decided to go with Lara, especially since you made it clear that it's usable in England (we were not sure as we don’t know anyone with this name). We appreciate all of your thoughts and support, it definitely helped us a lot!

Lara is an excellent choice and definitely no obvious negative associations here. I was simply wondering if I was missing something myself! I'm pleased you took the question as intended.

Aw that’s lovely - I love Lara - thanks so much for letting us know :)

I love Lara.

goldenretrievermum5 · 25/04/2024 17:17

I absolutely adore both OP - they were on my list for DD! I think that Lara has the edge though. It feels very strong whilst remaining elegant at the same time

AppleCrumbleTea · 25/04/2024 17:20

Lara I find a bit boring but it is a classic. Amber is also nice. I prefer Clara and Cara or Lyra.
