Thomasina, Thomasine, Thomeline, Thommeline, Tommeline, Tomasine, Tomasin, Tomine, Tomin

None of these? Are they all too weird?
What are your thoughts? Thanks!

Tamsin is lovely
Thomasina is OK
Thomasine, Thomeline, Thommeline, Tommeline, Tomasine, Tomasin, Tomine, Tomin - No to all of those. Tomin sounds like what my neighbour's cat gets up to.

How about Thora?

I love Thora!

Still makes me think you wanted a boy. Or you’re trying to pass on a name, but not in a nice name way, more because you’re having to. In which case use it as a middle name and give the child their own name and identity.

If you heard Thomasine, would that make you assume a boy called Thomas was expected? Or does that sound a bit different?

Hmm, probably unfortunately.

I just haven't heard these names before. It's a bit like Nigella Lawton's name. It just sounds like "Nigel is self centred enough to give his child a boy's name so they're named after him, despite the fact the child isn't a boy, because he wants a child named after him that much".

I know two adult men with traditional girls' names and they are both keen to establish nicknames that are different from the female sounding name and one acknowledged that they had a girl's name when they first met me, which is kind of sad.

housingplanningquestion · 11/04/2024 19:46

Why do you love it OP? Ultimately a name given with love and confidence does just tend to work out, if you are really keen on it.

ironorchids · 11/04/2024 19:48

Sorry, I don't mean giving your child a name you want is self centred.

I just think all these names sound like Thomas. Just make sure your kid knows that it's not that you wanted a boy, it's that you liked the names (or are honouring member member or whatever).

littlebitstuck2024 · 11/04/2024 19:52

I'd assume the dad is called Thomas and you thought you were having a boy or wanted a boy and had your heart set on naming him after his dad.
Tamsin is ok, it's nothing like Thomas or Tom

Needanewname42 · 11/04/2024 20:33

I'd definitely assume they were called after someone, Dad, or Grandfather.

Thomasina, Williamina, Jamesina are all quite dated names I don't think they'll be anyone under retirement age with them. Maybe they are due a come back

DrMadelineMaxwell · 11/04/2024 20:38

I'm a Tamsin (but spelled with a z, like Outhwaite) and it's nice to see that this thread seems to have some people saying they like it as the last thread I saw on here came down on the side of it not being nice.

jackstini · 11/04/2024 20:48

I would assume called after a family member - Thomas
Not that that's a bad thing

I like Tamsin the best

I love Thomasina. She’s the protagonist of Tom Stoppard’s ‘Arcadia’, one of my favourite plays. I think Nigella Lawton’s sister was called Thomasina.

Says it all really.

Nigel and Thomas.

fudgecat · 11/04/2024 20:58

Reminds me of a film I used to watch 40 odd years ago with a cat called thomasina

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 11/04/2024 21:44

Thomasine/Thomasin is nice imo - I don’t really see how it’s that different to Josephine , except more unusual and without the nice variety of nn’s. No I wouldn’t assume you wanted a boy, it’s an established if uncommon name for girls - a bit like Alberta, Davina etc.

Bear in mind though that phones correct to the better known Thomasina ( which I personally find a bit frillier with the extra syllable but I think its’s a cat film/ book) and also nn Tammy or Tina feels a bit dated to me - maybe she could use Mina at a push if she wants a nn?

I agree.
If you really NEED a Thomas sounding name, use it as a middle name! Some of those names read like Thumbelina and are truly awful.

Yes, I would assume rightly or wrongly that Thomas was yours or DH's recently passed father or grandfather or potentially the name of a previous stillbirth/late loss. Maybe you just like really the name Thomas?

Purpleavocado · 11/04/2024 22:04

I agree with the others, Tamsin is much nicer.i can't imagine being called Thomasina, it's a mouthful, so would be shortened to Tommie, and the people would end up saying 'girl Tommie' to clarify who they meant.

theduchessofspork · 11/04/2024 23:58

not weird
Thomasina,
Thomasine,
Tamsin

Tamsin always makes me think of tampax so I’d go for Thomasina

Weird
Thomeline, Thommeline, Tommeline, Tomasine, Tomasin, Tomine, Tomin

the last two sound like Scandi blokes’ names like Torben

dearohdearwhatdowehavehere · 12/04/2024 00:01

Just no. No to it and it's variants. What are you on?

It sounds in every way that you'd rather have a Thomas.

Duckies · 12/04/2024 08:32

I love Thomasina. I might assume Thomas is a family name. And also that you were quite posh.

Nicebloomers · 12/04/2024 09:21

Prefer Tamsin to Thomasina.

ScubaDivingSpiderMonkey · 12/04/2024 11:24

Tamsin is lovely. Gives me 17th century vibes. Beautiful herbalist woman who lives in the woods. Escapes the clutches of the witchfinder.

(I might have an overactive imagination)

Nap1983 · 12/04/2024 11:31

names that are mens names with “ina” on the end are extremely old fashioned. One of my friends has one as a middle name, we laugh at how old it is for her snd shes late 40s.
