Looking for inspiration! DH is Danish.
We've already a DS with a fairly common Danish/Swedish name.
Would love some suggestions, both boys and girls.
Left-field suggestions which may not have made it into the most popular rankings lists.
Might go for a common one as the primary name, and a more radical choice for middle name :-)

Tak! ❤️

Is Thora Danish?

@theduchessofspork

Yes Thora is the feminine to Thor. Not used a lot. 14 girls were named Thora in 2022.

Torben is very rare in young boys and so is Sanna in girls.

MumChp · 07/04/2024 22:34

This link in English should be useful. You can se the most popular given first names in Denmark and you can see how many people have the name in Denmark. Often young people and older people aren't called by the same kind of names. I think it is the same trend in many countries.

I’m mystified as to why Thora hasn’t been revived in the Uk along with Edith, Ada, Enid, Stella etc. Fabulous name. it’s pronounced Tora though in Denmark is it?

Enko · 08/04/2024 00:01

Depends on what sort of vibe you are going for
I too love Lykke but find it so hard in English we didn't name our dd this name..

We did use Margrethe and Sørine for middlenames. (I am Danish btw)

I love Regitze but again. Hard on English

For boys name I adore Søren never met a bad Søren..

Yes Tora/Thora and Tor/Thor sound very much alike in Danish.

Danish names have a slightly different ring to them than Swedish and Norwegian names, never mind the names found in Finland. There are of course the names with roots in ancient nordic history, but many Danish names have a hint of the germanic about them too.
Pronunciation is very particular, most names won't sound, when rolling off an English-speaking tongue, like they would if uttered by a Dane.
I love Theis for a boy and Gry and Saga for a girl. They sound lovely and soft in Danish but perhaps a bit harsh in English?

How important is the pronunciation to you/your DH?

Even seemingly straightforward names like Lotte and Mikkel will be pronounced quite differently by English speakers.

user1492757084 · 08/04/2024 08:35

😀

Whitewatergrafting · 08/04/2024 08:37

No suggestions but I would check with DH and family about any pitfalls like the Danish equivalent of Nigel, Barry and Ian. Unless that's your vibe.

dancingsands · 08/04/2024 08:44

I love the name torben and noa
