Thoughts on our top 3?

We haven't found out the sex of our baby due in June, so we've got short lists for boy and girl names. Girls we're struggling to decide between the 3, Boys we're struggling to settle on one of the best 3 we've come up with.

No firm ideas on middle names yet either so open to suggestions. Our surname is 2 syllables.

Thoughts on any of our top 3 welcome, or new suggestions for a boy!

Edith
Matilda
Astrid

Oliver
Rowan
Xander / Zander. I prefer the Z spelling as a stand-alone name, if it weren't for the fish association.

Thanks in advance!

Most people have lives outside of watching TV..

Nice shortlists.

You can decide on the name when the baby is here.

Thank you Smile

Alexander / Alex is unfortunately ruled out for reasons, so it would be Xander as a stand alone name.

It bothers me a bit that Oliver is so popular according to lists but actually we only know one, he's an adult, and we think he'd be quite tickled to have a little namesake. We don't know any children called Oliver despite its recent popularity.

I think this about our child's 'common', I don't know any! However I think they all come out the woodwork when you get to nursery/school!

Also I've read it explained before that having a common name now is not the same as it used to be, as a wider variety of names are being used still. So (to just make up figures for an example) where the top name maybe used to 10% of babies would be called it, now the top name might be 2% of babies. So still won't come across as many in the way we used to with Rachel, sarah, Sophie etc

Its a pretty famous show and joke, thought OP should know, no need to be an ass turd yourself 😂

FoleyHuck · 28/03/2024 07:20

Thanks all! We couldn't give a toss about a joke in an episode of a dated sitcom to be honest. I was already aware of it from another source. I've never watched the office, DH has but the joke never stuck with him.

My own name was disparaged in a song by a huge international musical artist and it's had exactly 0 effect on my life.

Any name could come up negatively in popular culture at any point, I don't think it's a problem until you get to the realms of Alexa, Isis and probably Karen at this stage.

Thanks for the further suggestions, some to consider! DH's name and one that's very close to our surname have both come up, so probably not those but clearly on the right lines to suit us Grin

Matilda. No keen on
others.
Oliver. I like Alexander, then shorten, but you have ruled that out 🙂
Rowans I have come across are girls

MKWarrier · 28/03/2024 08:13

Matilda for a girl - but I’m biased as we have one! I’m told it’s popular but we’ve only met one other in the last couple of years. I like Astrid too.

I like Oliver and Xander from your boy list.

Liv999 · 28/03/2024 09:14

Definitely not Astrid, sounds too harsh, Edith would be my favourite there
Rowan is gorgeous for a boy, much nicer than Oliver or Xander

Purplecatshopaholic · 28/03/2024 09:18

I particularly like Astrid, it’s lovely. Edith is terrible - I know names like this are popular just now, but I’m not a fan.
All the boys names are lovely.

MerryChristmasToYou · 28/03/2024 11:03

Edith - not keen and Edie is too close to Evie and ED
Matilda - quite like it but not Tilda and it seems oveeused. I like Hilda
Astrid - like it

Oliver - safe
Rowan - nice but Roman and Reuben are very popular
Xander / Zander. - No, but ok if short for Alexander, which it won't be. Zander is awful. Anders might be an alternative.

Astrid and Oliver

Newsenmum · 28/03/2024 11:04

For boys I’d go with Rowan or Xander. Oliver is absolutely everywhere.

Yuckyyuckyuckity · 28/03/2024 11:10

I like Rowan the best out of the boys names but the others are also nice.

The girls names are not really my 'vibe' but out of them I'd probably say Matilda. Just really don't like Tilda or Tilly as nicknames.

Personally I really dislike Edith, I know old lady names are having a resurgence but this one is really not nice IMO.

Fridaysgirl17 · 28/03/2024 11:14

Astrid & Rowan would be my top picks , & as said Rowan could be for either. I adore Astrid & if I ever had a girl I'd definitely use it but I'm done having kids with my 2 boys happily

DontGiveADuck · 28/03/2024 12:48

I don’t like any of the girls names. Matilda is so popular it’s dull and I dislike Tillie. Astrid is quite harsh and Edith is frumpy. I like Edie though.

Oliver is ok but hugely popular. I know quite a few. Not a fan of Xander as I prefer Alexander. Rowen is ok.

shoopshoopdedoo · 30/03/2024 00:30

Love Edith, like Matilda, dislike Astrid.

Love Oliver, like Xander (love Alexander), dislike Rowan.

NC100000 · 30/03/2024 01:27

NuffSaidSam · 27/03/2024 21:04

I love Matilda, but it is popular.

Astrid is strong and not overused.

Not keen on Edith.

Oliver is a great name, but so popular for so long.

Rowan I absolutely love for a girl, less keen for a boy.

Not keen on Xander (and definitely not Zander). Alexander is a good name.

Astrid is really popular among babies in London. Lovely though.

Edith for me! Really cute and could give the nickname Edie.

Oliver for a boy. Classic and popular for a reason but timeless I think. Don’t think Astrid is as timeless despite it being increasingly popular here.

NC100000 · 30/03/2024 01:28

I’d also consider future siblings if relevant. Oliver and Edith complement well I think.
