I really love ophelia and had my heart set on it but dh while isn't against it, loves double barrel names.
If Eliza then she would be called Eliza may after both grandmother's.
Thought I'd ask for opinion

Love Eliza!

Ophelia I’m really not a fan of, sounds quite witchy and trendy to me

I like Eliza but doubled barrelled names are v low rent, and something-May is the worst cliche of the lot, so I wouldn’t do that to her

what does low rent mean?

SkaneTos · 23/03/2024 20:04

Both Ophelia and Eliza are lovely names.

Hoolahoophop · 23/03/2024 20:06

Depends on second name. No one wants to go to School as an Ophelia Balls

Hotgirlwinter · 23/03/2024 20:11

I personally really don’t like Eliza, it just makes me think of kids dressed in rags being sent up the chimneys! Always said in a Cockney accent.

Eliza-May really does sound even more like a scully maid from Downtown Abbey!!!

buuuuuut and this is what is important, it’s your baby and your choice. If you like the names then go for it. Out of the two I’d go for Ophelia. You might get Ellie for short.

Talkwhilstyouwalk · 23/03/2024 20:12

Both nice! Good strong names. Ophelia is quite posh if that's what you are going for.

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 23/03/2024 20:12

I really don't like Eliza - Eliza Dolittle!
Agree about Eliza-May, which is like one of the names from Ted. Ophelia is much more classy.

amz4 · 23/03/2024 21:18

I prefer Ophelia 😊 Lovely name

Kittythecutest · 24/03/2024 10:49

I disagree that Ophelia is posh, it is becoming increasingly popular these days and I think it’s stated to sound the opposite of posh to be honest.

Eliza is one of my favourites

NavyPeer · 24/03/2024 10:59

Ophelia is definitely having a moment now. I’ve met 3 little Ophelias this year.

i personally don’t like it. It’s very frilly and I think it’s a horrible, sad namesake given what happens to Shakespeare’s Ophelia. I immediately associate the name with the character.

Eliza is much better. It’s feisty, timeless, lovely.

Moreteaandchocolate · 24/03/2024 11:02

I love Eliza! It’s quite popular around us for primary school children and sounds both modern and traditional at the same time.

I wouldn’t personally like to be called Ophelia - it’s a bit pretentious sounding to me - but that’s obviously just my opinion and I’m sure I’d change my view if I met a little Ophelia.

scoopdewhoop · 24/03/2024 11:05

Ophelia is lovely but I always associate it with death too (I always think of the painting where she has drowned) so I couldn't name a baby Ophelia.

I think the OP meant they're as common as fuck. Certainly on the sprawling council estate where I live they are anyway.

BoleynMemories13 · 24/03/2024 13:06

I much prefer Eliza but Eliza middle name May, not Eliza-May.

Ophelia is much too frilly and fussy for my liking. It use to be quite posh sounding but it's become an of the moment celeb wannabe trend so seems to be chosen by all sorts these days. Eliza is much classier.

pambeesleyhalpert · 24/03/2024 13:08

I love Eliza

CheshireCat1 · 24/03/2024 13:09

I always think of Hamlet when I hear the name Ophelia, I think it’s a sad name.

Nicebloomers · 24/03/2024 13:51

Not a fan of names with May/Mae hyphenated onto them. There’s a lot and it feels overly cutesy to my ears. Put May in as a middle name, there’s no reason your husband can’t call her Eliza May if that’s his preference. Eliza is pretty and good for a child and a grown woman.

Ophelia is a pretty name but a sad character. It wouldn’t necessarily stop me using the name along with names such as Salome.

DontGiveADuck · 24/03/2024 14:05

May is quite literally every girl’s middle name, it’s been done to death. Every Eliza will have May/Rose/Grace as their middle name. She’ll just blend into the sea of Evie Mays and Ava Mays and Ivy Mays.

I find Ophelia a bit pretentious.
