Gina for a baby girl?

hi everyone my partner and I have agreed on a few baby girl names but there is only one we both seem to love. The name is Gina, it seems to have fallen out of favour in the past few years with only a handful of baby girls being names Gina each year. Are you aware of any reasons why this might be? Is there something we aren’t aware of… Celebrity scandals etc? Do you think the name is dated? Or was it never that popular in the first place in the uk?

I’d really like to name my daughter something she would like. I’m a bit worries she might feel it’s a name more suited to her parents generation. The only Gina’s I know are my age having said that I don’t think imwas ever a super popular name in my age group either. Any thoughts you’d be happy to share?

I know an adult Gina (just Gina, not Georgina) and she's a wonderful person so I have very positive connotations with the name. I say go for it Smile

ChelseeDagger · 13/02/2024 20:23

Yes, very nice OP. I approve.

Thank you great to know! We think it’s a really beautiful name. But the easy pronunciation and spelling is a big plus

I have an older cousin called Gina so it feels a bit dated to me.
My friend recently called her new baby Gia which I think is beautiful ❤️

Ah yes Gia is lovely too

Actually really like it! So different.

DuchessOfSausage · 14/02/2024 12:26

I don't like Gia. It's Jah in Italian not Gee-ah. Gia sounds to much like Mia, Lia, Sophia etc

KnickerlessParsons · 14/02/2024 12:34

I know a Regina who's called Gina on a daily basis.

Gina is a nn IMO, and not a name in its own right

BlindurErBóklausMaður · 14/02/2024 20:19

I'm in Italy and have a friend called Gia.
The name Gia is pronounced differently to the adverb giá. It's actually short for Giacinta but I'd often used in its own right.
I prefer Gina though. (Short for Luigia usually, but also a name in its own right)

Thanks for your comments everyone. At first I was a little disheartened about the va Gina references but there have been plenty of positive comments too. I also know an adult Gina and she never got teased for her name. We were considering another short 2 syllable name but it has spelling and pronunciation issues so Gina is definitely a winner out of the 2 options. Georgina with a nickname Gina is a great option too

Love it. Gives me very Italian American vibes

QueSyrahSyrah · 14/02/2024 22:37

@Leenalee My adult friend Gina has never ever had any of the va-Gina suggestions here, probably because it's not pronounced the same so why would she? It would be as nonsensical as people called Ana getting 'Ana-l' jokes

It does get shortened for her, she's often known simply as 'G'.

justthethreeofusx · 14/02/2024 23:32

Lovely name. I know a Gina and she's beautiful so sells it for me. If you like it you may also like Nina and Lena which are slightly softer sounding, depending on your preference. I love them all tbh!

theduchessofspork · 14/02/2024 23:36

I think it’s nothingy as a full name - like Lia or something

It’s ok short for Georgina, which is how it’s usually used I think

lavenderjump · 15/02/2024 07:32

I prefer Georgiana or Gianna with a nn Gia or Gigi

Hummusandstuff · 15/02/2024 07:38

It’s a great name. Agree that Georgina is slightly better though. Gives options.

Sandpitnotmoshpit · 15/02/2024 07:42

I think Georgina has lots of lovely nicknames - Georgie, George, Gina, I've known a Genie. I also really like Gina on its own - like Nina but less common. I am biased I think as I've only known one Gina (at work, 20 years older than me) and she was a complete hero.

It's lovely. Another Gina Lollabrigida fan here
