Iris?

I like Iris but DH hates it. Not sure if LO would cope in school with the name and am trying to be conscious not to pick a name 'just to be different'.
Also tend to be put off by other peoples reaction. What do you all think?

I think it doesn't matter what all of us think, if your dh hates it you can't choose it!

belgo · 22/03/2008 15:23

It is a nice name though, not especially 'different'

dizzychixies · 22/03/2008 15:24

I like it

FranSanDisco · 22/03/2008 15:25

No, not really.

luckylady74 · 22/03/2008 15:32

Beautiful name, but compromise is important - does he hate it because he thinks it's ugly or because it's unusual/old fashioned - if it's the latter then you could change his mind. I wore my dh down - the final thing that did it was when I discovered his hero Joe Strummer had called his dd the same and now he loves our dd's name.

norkmaiden · 22/03/2008 15:35

I like it a lot.

ExtraFancy · 22/03/2008 15:57

I love it, and if I ever have a girl I will call her Iris. Iris was the Greek goddess of the rainbow

Lauriefairycake · 22/03/2008 15:59

lovely name, would not be 'different' round where I live

Hope you persuade him

artichokes · 22/03/2008 16:00

Around here (West London) it would not be different at all. Its pretty popular.

I think it has been pretty popular since Jude Law and Sadie Frost used it for their daugher.

I have two friends with DD's called Iris. Otherwise I might have suggested it for our DD.

noddyholder · 22/03/2008 16:05

It lovely

AbbeyA · 22/03/2008 16:09

If DH hates it I wouldn't even try and talk him around. I think you would have to have a fairly confident DD to carry off a name like that. (I don't like it).

alfiesbabe · 22/03/2008 16:56

I like it, but I agree with AbbeyA that if your DH hates it, it's a bit unreasonable to think you can persuade him. There must be other names that you both like so you can agree on something. I don't think I would have been happy with a name I hated for any of my kids, however much dh loved it!

suzywong · 22/03/2008 17:05

Syphillis is really very very different and quite pretty too

wheelybug · 22/03/2008 17:07

I love it - was my top girl's name until one of my best friends used it (amicably I hasten to add).

CocoDeBearisCocoDeBear · 22/03/2008 17:19

I like it, I love flower names. It's not that unusual here in London.

You can't have it if your DH doesn't like it. I was all for Daisy, but DH hated it. I think Iris was on the vetoed list too, thinking back... So we compromised.

lovely
but agree you can't have it if dp hates it

lentengrrl · 22/03/2008 17:27

lovely...

and not all that out there at all. quite normal in my manor.

tummytickler · 22/03/2008 19:16

I have a 7 yr old dd named Iris and she has never been teased because of her name.
I dont think it is a wild, out there choice of name - it is a classic name that has been used steadily for years, never terribly popular but always used. Iris could be 2 years, 28 yrs, 50 yrs or 80 years.
A good solid classic name along the same lines as Beatrice, Tabitha, Rose etc.
However if dh hates it you can't use it. He mogh come around though mine did for both our ds names.
Middle name spot possibly?

slinkiemalinki · 23/03/2008 15:45

I like it - have a friend who's just used it; she loves Iris Murdoch. It's grown on me.

winnie76winnie · 23/03/2008 15:47

I love it - hope you can change his mind!!

stringbean · 23/03/2008 18:56

Love this name - I wanted it for dd but my entire family shouted me down. They have since concluded that it would have suited her very well - typical!! Ds has a popular name so I really wanted something a little different for dd, and wish I had stuck to my guns - it's a beautiful name.

donnie · 23/03/2008 18:58

I also like this name. But agreement is important.

I wanted to name dd2 Cordelia but DH doesn't like it ( bloody philistine)so we settled on something else.

chonky · 23/03/2008 19:01

I love it (it's my Nan's name so I'm biased). I love the meaning of it too.

babblington · 23/03/2008 19:10

We liked Iris but went for Isis, after seeing how popular Iris is at the moment...
