Hi all!
I've got a list of names for a baby girl. Can I please get any opinions, favourites, or new suggestions!! Really struggling and only have a few weeks before she is born.

My list so far is:
Nancy
Evelyn
Ada
Esther
Edith

Help?!

Nancy - great
Evelyn - don't like it. Another Evie
Ada - not keen
Esther - like
Edith - not keen
Enid - the original pronunciation (ENN-id) is lovely. Ee-nid isn't.

If you like Esther, what about Aster x

NachosAndCheese · 07/02/2024 14:24

Evelyn is far from underused. Every other girl is an Evie.

KirstenBlest · 07/02/2024 14:28

@MaloneMeadow , Esther isn't overused!

Those figures only go up to 2021 - it’s seeing a big resurgence at the minute

My favourites are Esther and Ada - not overused, great for all ages, short enough not to be regularly shortened, familiar and pretty but not twee.

I also really like Edith, nn Edie. Evelyn is lovely but there are so many Eve type names around atm.

Nancy is ok, just harder to imagine for an adult (although I’m sure I’d get used to it once I’d met an adult called Nancy!)

Other ideas -

Audrey
Hazel
Mila
Lyra
Martha
Mabel
Carla
Seren
Eira
Abigail

I think it depends where you live - every other baby girl I know of born recently has been called Ada - 5 of my colleagues have an Ada (not joking!) - this is in London. So depending on where you are/ whether you are bothered about popularity or not you might want to avoid that one.

I like Edith. I do know one of those, but she is 9 now. Nickname Edie which is cute.

Nancy is the standout for me - it’s a lovely, lively, ‘happy’ name. Good balance of classic and just interesting enough.

Evelyn - I find this dull, and it merges into all the other Evie/Eva/Ava-type names
Ada - nice enough, but Ava is one of the more overused names of the past 5/10 years and I think Ava is beginning to follow suit as people look for a similar alternative
Esther - my second favourite; it’s pretty and strong but feels a very earnest/serious name, probably because all the ones I know are pretty devout Christians (Martha for e.g. feels similar). Love the Aster suggestion.
Edith - OK. I’m not overly keen on the ‘ith’ sound!

Frida
Thora
Hazel
Pearl
Helena (Nell)
Eleanor (Nell)
Agnes
Dorothy
Iris
Greta
Aphra
Vita
Antonia
Sylvia
Viola

@MaloneMeadow Unless you work for the ONS I don't see how you could know that 🤔 They're not releasing their 2022 stats until next month at the earliest.

Going from the current trend of ‘old’ names I’d say it’s up there. It’s mentioned on MN a lot at the minute so it’s certainly gaining popularity again

Oo I love Esther. I know a lovely Esther who is super cool. Really unusual too.

Good luck with the new baby!

KirstenBlest · 07/02/2024 19:15

@MaloneMeadow , If it's gone up from #166 to the top 50 since 2021 there's something strange going on, especially given that it's previously been quite stable.

Also, lots of mentions on MN Baby Names isn't a reflection on the real world. Claudia appears regularly but the name isn't much used.

AngelaBB · 07/02/2024 19:18

I love Ada, also I love Eve rather that Evie or Evelyn.

Nancy is my favourite from your list, then Edith then Ada. Am afraid I'm not a huge fan of the others. Evelyn is too common and I really dislike the sound of Esther!
