Classic but unusual boys names

The kind of name where someone would say ‘ooh I’ve never met an X before’, but also wouldn’t raise eyebrows in a rural village where most boys are called Henry, Oliver, Edward/Teddy, Arthur etc.

Having said that John would feel quite fresh these days, and Philip (Pip) would too - Alexander is popular but Sacha or Sandy as a nn would be much rarer

These are hardly unusual.

I know lots of young Jameses and Matthews and a gazziliion adult Tims and Andys!

Thethingswedoforlove · 04/02/2024 08:52

I thought they were relatively unusual among new babies. Obv. Not unusual amongst adults.

James has been in the top 30 for about 50 years. It also seems to be every other boy's middle name

However I know numerous children under 5 named Casper/Caspar (3!), Sebastian (3), Fred/Freddie/Frederick(3), Alfred (3) and Toby/Tobias (2). But those are all lovely names, respectable and popular for good reason.

toastofthetown · 04/02/2024 13:21

Hector has had a few mentions and is top of my name list and is DH approved! Lysander too which is my favourite boys name, but I worry that it might be bit too much (and it’s a firm no from my husband anyway). I especially like Ambrose, August, Benedict (but Ben feels inevitable and I’m not keen), Crsipin, Francis, Lucien, Magnus, Peregrine/Perry, Raphael, Robin, Rufus, Stellan (but doesn’t work with surname) and Walter. I'm less keen on throwback names from 60-90s which feel dull to me because I know so many of them (and have a large extended family so most are taken) but also because popularity as a whole matters to me. If I have a son, he won't be only in his own age group for long, and it won't be long before he's in workplace;/ mixed age hobby group with all the Matthews, Davids and Lukes from previous generations.

I might get DH to look through the thread independently to see what he says he likes from it.
