Tobias or Tobin?

Hi all,
Baby boy is due in 5w time and struggling for a name we both agree on and is not too popular,
or too traditional...
We both like Toby, but as a shortening, of either Tobias or Tobin..

What are your thoughts? Tobin is far less common than Tobias and we like it but would like to know how it sounds to others?

Thanks! Blush

Both try hard and Tobin reminds me of the serial killer:

Toby is nice itself

PTSDBarbiegirl · 02/02/2024 08:14

Sorry but Tobin will be linked to Peter Tobin, horror figure.

todayshappening · 02/02/2024 08:16

Tobias is a beautiful name

NeedAdvice8 · 02/02/2024 08:20

Tobin makes me think of a killer - Peter Tobin and also Tobin Bell actor who plays Saw killer.
Tobias is a great name. It’s quite popular in Germany, it’s an old name, nothing made up.

Anjea · 02/02/2024 08:21

Isn't there a serial killer called Tobin?

VinegarTrio · 02/02/2024 08:25

I prefer Tobin. I don’t like Tobias at all.

People aren’t going to look at a child called Tobin and think ‘serial killer’.

The general problem with either is the risk of Toby as a shortening. Toby is a really dreadful name IMO.

Most people wouldn't use Myra would they?

The trouble is with some names that's exactly what happens.

I've taught one Myra in all my years as a teacher and whilst she was a perfectly lovely child my absolute first thought upon meeting her was to think of that Myra. I obviously didn't say that to her or her parents but I doubt I'm alone in it being the immediate response to the name.

Tobias is a bloody lovely name and if it going to be shortened to Toby anyway then why saddle the poor kid with a name that most people hear and think of serial killer?

KirstenBlest · 02/02/2024 09:48

Tobias or just Toby

SingingSands · 02/02/2024 15:27

If you both like Toby, why can't you just call him Toby?

SunnyFog · 02/02/2024 22:21

AboutYouAndPeru · 02/02/2024 06:27

Where I grew up Tobin was the name of a funeral firm. So that is what I think of.

Tobias is nice and quite classic. My DH suggested 'Tobermory' with nn Toby when I was having DS2 which is also nice IMO

Tobermory was the name of one of the Wombles, a family of cute furry creatures in a childrens tv show.... or it is a placename meaning Mary's Well, from Scots Gaelic Tobar Muiri (sorry not sure of exact spelling).

Tobias - fabulous name

Tobin is a bit hobbit like..

SquigglePigs · 02/02/2024 23:12

Tobin is fine but I love Tobias.

CherryPiePiePie · 02/02/2024 23:38

I love Tobias!

KThnxBye · 02/02/2024 23:55

Another who immediately jumped to serial killer.

Tobias for me.

PickledScrump · 03/02/2024 19:29

Never heard of Peter Tobin, but just like any other name that has potentially negative links, no one is going to look at your child and think about a serial killer. They’ll think of your child.

I love both, I think they are good strong names and prefer both to Toby. I’d be inclined to sway more towards Tobin as Tobias has become more popular but I don’t think it’s overly popular by any stretch

RosaSkyes · 03/02/2024 19:36

It doesn’t necessarily give you Toby, but there’s Torben which has a super cool meaning and is a first name

of your two, i’d say Tobias

CousinGreg55 · 03/02/2024 19:39

My first thought was Peter Tobin as well

VinegarTrio · 03/02/2024 19:46

The name Amelia is the same as a congenital limb deformity. But it’s still massively popular and has been sitting near the top of the baby name lists for years now.

Peter Tobin really isn’t so infamous that anyone bearing his name will have to live with the connotations of his crimes. This feels like a classic MN - oh someone said there was a murderer (etc) and everyone saying ‘oh no. I just think serial killer’.

There are an awful lot of jacks out there despite Jack the Ripper being more widely known. And MNers often get very excited about Ted as a nickname without everyone going - well I think serial killer.

Maybe the parents are big papa roach fans.

The first thing that comes to mind when I hear Tobin is actually an American academic who writes about early childhood education.

But, if I knew a little boy called Tobin, I wouldn’t be thinking about bloody serial killers. I’d just see a little boy with a nice enough name.

i like Torben and no one is going to Toby that!

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 03/02/2024 20:37

I love Tobin!! Much prefer it to Tobias.
The Tobin I taught was not a "Toby".

So what if it's a surname? Many surnames can be /are used as make first names - Spencer, Bailey, Cooper, Riley, Blake, Neil...

Vettrianofan · 03/02/2024 20:41

HirplesWithHaggis · 02/02/2024 02:31

Tobin makes me think of Peter of that ilk.

Wasn't just me showing up to refer to that thing either...

Ellmau · 02/02/2024 00:42

Tobias. Tobin sounds like a surname.

I would definitely think serial killer. Grim.

OurfriendsintheNE · 03/02/2024 20:52

Yes, the serial killer immediately comes to mind with Tobin. It’s not a common name, many people will connect it.

Tobias is nice.
