Phoebe or Artemis

I have a three year old daughter with a Greek name, though maybe not recognisably so. I want to choose another Greek name for my daughter who will be born in the next few weeks.

We've narrowed the list down to Phoebe and Artemis, so it'll definitely be one of those names. The problem is I slightly lean towards one and my husband slightly leans towards the other.

Just wondering if you had to pick between the two, which would you pick?

Both are lovely. I think I’d pick Phoebe as, personally, it’s what I’d prefer to be called.

Interesting name choice. What is your other dd called?
I prefer Phoebe because it sounds softer, Artemis is a bit harsh on the ears.

Too many Phoebes about atm. Artemis will be called Arty for short. Why not Astraea, (Means “Star” - Apollo’s twin sister (another form of Artemis) who was also the Goddess of Justice.) Anthaeia - Nereid (mermaid/sea goddess) married to Poseidon. Calliope - Goddess of Magic.

I like Phoebe.

I don't like Artemis. There's an after shave called this, just sounds like more of a boy's name to me.

Thanks for all the input. Probably going to go for Artemis.

This has been really helpful in making up my own mind about it. I don't really agree with a lot of the criticism of Artemis, but the criticism of Phoebe chimed with a lot of my own reservations about the name. So it has been useful that way.

Everyone has different feelings about names, and I'd probably hate some of the ones that other posters would pick (though I probably wouldn't phrase it as stridently as some on here do 😂).

Artemis, it's less common, and the connections to the name are great. Phoebes were everywhere when I was teaching.
I actually seriously considered Artemisia for my daughter.

tulipsonatable · 26/01/2024 05:29

I love Artemisia - but it's a step too far for my husband!

Both are gorgeous. I don't think you can go wrong with either! Artemis has the slight edge for me though.

Artemis is great. Ignore the haters.

MrsSkylerWhite · 26/01/2024 11:22

Both are good. Sorry, no help at all 😁

Makes me think " Optimus Prime"
