Thoughts on these M names for a boy?

Murray
Mackinley
Malcolm

We love all 3, but can't decide which one to go for. Our surname is one syllable.

Please don't call a child Malcolm in 2024.

I know three of them under age 6.

Gemstonebeach · 20/01/2024 04:49

My pick out of yours would be MacKinley nn Mac, is a family surname? But I would pick Maxwell myself or Murdoch if it needs to be an M start.

MissedItByThisMuch · 20/01/2024 05:17

I like Malcolm, I think it’s the type of strong old-fashioned name that will come back and fit right in with the grandpa names. I prefer it to Murray, and don’t like McKinley at all.

Pozz · 20/01/2024 05:50

Max

Babyblackbear78 · 20/01/2024 06:14

Malcolm is terrible.

Shouldgetupearlier · 20/01/2024 06:24

Murray ( or Murdo, as a PP suggested)

HuntingoftheSnark · 20/01/2024 06:33

Magnus is an excellent M name

familyissues12345 · 20/01/2024 07:12

I don't know why, but Mackinley to me sounds like I'd expect the child to be a girl. I actually quite like it!

Magnus
Max
Cormac - I know not an M, but you could use Mack as a nickname
Matthew

MamaBearsss · 20/01/2024 07:38

Magnus is lovely!

Squirrelsnut · 20/01/2024 07:40

Malcolm Talcum
Murray Mint
The other one sounds a wee bit...you know.
Michael, Marcus, Marshall, Martin?

JemOfAWoman · 20/01/2024 07:41

Scottish grandson is Magnus - he'll grow into it but for now he's called 'boy' 🙄

KirstenBlest · 20/01/2024 08:48

They're all surnames. Why not add McMahon, Morrissey, Murphy, Montague, Mitchell, Maplin, Matthews etc on to the list?

Onelife2024 · 20/01/2024 09:22

From those 3 options, I prefer Murray, although it’s still not really to my taste. Sorry I don’t like Malcolm or McKinley.

How about -

Maxwell
Mack / Mac (pp suggestion of Cormac as full name is a good one)
Murdoch

Ellysetta · 20/01/2024 09:28

Malcolm is nice. You never meet a mean Malcolm and he can always call himself Callum as a nickname if he feels like it when he’s older.

Can I interest you in Max? I’ve always felt it’s such a strong name and it can sound very cool with a short surname.

None are to my personal taste but they are far from the worst names suggested in the thread (I definitely wouldn’t saddle a child with the name Mungo for example). If I had to rank them from most liked to least liked:

MacKinley
Murry
Malcolm

Ultimately it doesn’t matter what anybody else says though, no names are to everybody’s taste. Go with whatever you and your husband like best and if you can’t decide wait until your son arrives and see what seems to suit him best, you don’t have to know his name in advance.

That's a great point. Thank you.

We do like Max. And Magnus is growing on me.

Not keen on any of those - sorry. Malcolm is probably the least bad.

And that's saying something!

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 20/01/2024 10:39

Morrissey
Murray

Doublebiscuit77 · 20/01/2024 12:37

Max, Magnus or Malcolm - all good.
