Heard this name for the first time in ages and couldn’t help but think it would be sweet for a little girl. Thoughts?

It’s a Maxine Carr from me too I’m afraid…

Enko · 11/01/2024 20:06

I like Maxine. Always have. Carr didn't ruin it for me. I think it's a beautiful name.

I know a Maxine and have never thought about the Carr connection. I really don’t think a baby growing up now will have any association with Maxine Carr as their peers will not have heard of her.

Elisabeth Bathory was pretty horrible, but lots of people call their child Elisabeth.

I have also worked with quite a few men called Atilla!

Quite a lot of time has gone by since the Hun was on the rampage though! On the other hand, you still don’t meet many German Adolfs…

There’s always one.

Actually, over the many years on Mumsnet that the Soham case has been discussed, what many of us have pointed out is how repugnant it is that the woman who wasn't even in the same county as Ian Huntley at the time receives far more misogynistic bile than, you know, actual murderers.

Snowydaysfaraway · 11/01/2024 20:09

Carr..plenty of nicer names op..
Pick one of those..

KirstenBlest · 11/01/2024 20:11

I know a Maxine and didn't think of any infamous person. Wasn't there a Maxine on Corrie?

ElevenSeven · 11/01/2024 20:11

It’s not misogynistic to detest Maxine Carr.

Startyabastard · 11/01/2024 20:15

It's too 70s/80s in my view and that's before thinking of Maxine Carr.

theduchessofspork · 11/01/2024 20:20

It’s of a piece with Denise and Dawn. I expect they will get revived in 25 years or so, but don’t think that day needs to be hurried in..

theduchessofspork · 11/01/2024 20:21

Maxima is quite fun though.. and that has a v different vibe

Its a bit misleading to talk about it like Maxine Carr was in another county and did absolutely nothing wrong. She lied and perverted the course of justice. She covered for the man who murdered two little girls and would have continued to do so. For that reason she deserves bile, and it's not misogynistic. I have read Laura Bates and many other feminist perspectives and completely disagree with your take.

OP, not a name I would choose regardless of associations, but I do like Max.

The difference between Elisabeth and Maxine is that there have hundreds of Elisabeth/Elizabeth's in history without negative connotations to outweigh the odd bad one. The only other Maxine I can think of besides Carr is Peake.

ZiggyZowie · 11/01/2024 20:29

What about. Nadine. ?

It has similar sound and is quite pretty

MariaLuna · 11/01/2024 20:30

Just no. Too many associations.

OP, do you know about this crime?

Don't taint your child with a name like that.

rainbowsparkle28 · 11/01/2024 19:26

In all honesty the first thing that springs to mind is Maxine Carr.

I thought this immediately and I am not in the UK.

GreenClock · 11/01/2024 20:48

I think of the one on Corrie but I watch Classic Corrie where the character Maxine (no longer in it) is currently being discussed a lot by her family.

Nadine was mentioned upthread (heard it for the first time in ages on the most recent Fargo).

I am a fan of both names and favour them over anything in the current Top Ten but I agree they have a “1970s-baby” vibe which many will feel is not due a revival quite yet. I’m a bit surprised that Stranger Things didn’t give a recent boost to the name Maxine nn Max, though. The character was really strong and confident.

Nadine is nice. Also Claudine.

Copasetic · 11/01/2024 22:39

It's not a name I couldn't like. One of my cousin's first wife was called Maxine and she constantly told him off!

SparklyOwls · 11/01/2024 22:48

What about Megan?

OwlWeiwei · 11/01/2024 23:01

BlindurErBóklausMaður · 11/01/2024 19:42

Maxine Carr didn't murder anybody.
Do you feel the same about the name Ian or Frederick?

She enabled and covered up for a murderer. She was actively complicit.

I'm not keen on the name. The only one I know in real life is an extremely difficult, overbearing person.

eblue · 11/01/2024 23:02

I thought of Maxine Peacock straight away lol

Takeitinturns · 11/01/2024 23:25

I like Maxine, it’s different, spunky but pretty and would be so refreshing on a little girl. But I do think Maxine Carr which is a great shame! I like Maxima as well - think it’s a Dutch royal name. How about Ondine? Celine? Emmeline? I’d stick with the “ine” ending it’s nice.

thedefinitive · 11/01/2024 23:41

Nope, don't like it.

Falkenburg · 12/01/2024 01:19

Nadine is ghastly! I can only picture the name being said by a Hillbilly with a long drawl - "Nayyyyydeeeeen!" Awful.

Jessica Simpson has a daughter called Maxwell which is better than Maxine which is horrible regardless of Maxine Carr's association.
