Thoughts on the name Marlowe?

I absolutely love the name Marlowe for a girl and just wondered what people’s thoughts were! My only concern is that people may spell it wrong, what do you think?

Also, are there any cute nicknames?

@Frederica145 I've got the full set and occasionally reread them! I'd have loved to use the name Rowan but it's too close to DH's name

Swearwolf · 09/01/2024 18:26

I really like it! It sounds elegant. You won't get a great response on MN, there are always a lot who don't like anything surname-y or American-sounding. I think it's a nice choice!

Riapia · 09/01/2024 18:30

Marlboro
Malawi
Malodorous

FrostieBoabby · 09/01/2024 18:33

Not keen I'm afraid, knew a dog called Marlo years ago but don't think it suits a human and the spelling would casue a lifetime of 'it's Marlow with an E'.

olympicsrock · 09/01/2024 18:34

It’s a town or Surname and would always be spelt wrong. Sorry

JanglingJack · 09/01/2024 18:35

As long as you're not from Harlow.

IfYouDontAsk · 09/01/2024 18:37

I love it and I hardly ever like really unusual names 👀

inappropriateraspberry · 09/01/2024 19:15

It's a surname.

Hibernatalie · 09/01/2024 19:18

I love it.

Nn Marley or Lola

Hibernatalie · 09/01/2024 19:19

Sienna Miller's daughter is called Marlowe btw

Okitten · 09/01/2024 19:20

I love it!

passiveaggressivenonsense · 09/01/2024 19:21

Malo is a French boys name

inappropriateraspberry · 09/01/2024 19:15

It's a surname.

So is Connor. So is Murphy, Murray ….

Carouselfish · 09/01/2024 19:22

Orson Welles liked Christopher Marlowe so much hw named his first daughter Christopher.
It's better than that!

inappropriateraspberry · 09/01/2024 19:23

@Okitten Yep, and I don't like those either! 😆

HellsToilet · 09/01/2024 19:27

I knew someone who named their male dog Marlowe, English graduate (the friend not the dog). Just make sure she avoid late night bar fights but that's good advice for us all.

WimpoleHat · 09/01/2024 19:29

^Marlow is a pretty town to visit. Marlowe was a playwright.
It's not great as a name.*

Spot on. It’s not great - at all - as a first name (in my opinion).

KirstenBlest · 09/01/2024 19:42

@Okitten , do you think Connor, Murphy and Murray are suitable first names for girls?

CanIbeRio · 09/01/2024 20:04

Sorry OP...not keen. It sounds like the kind of name that gets given by a developer to the style of a house on a new housing estate!...."Come visit our new showhome and have a look round the 4 bed detached 'Marlowe'! "

WhatNoUsername · 09/01/2024 20:10

I love it!

Crimblecrumble1990 · 09/01/2024 20:22

I know of a couple of little girl Marlowes (and Marleys). Perfectly nice name. We also live pretty near the Buckinghamshire town of Marlow, not an issue.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 09/01/2024 20:23

Prefer Harlow

ChildrenOfTheQuorn · 09/01/2024 20:46

Eek. No.

NewYearNewPyjamas · 09/01/2024 20:48

Not heard it before. I quite like it. Wouldn't use it myself but would give an enthusiastic nod to anyone who said they were going to.

But it will forever be spelt wrong or she will be spelling it forever. It gets annoying.

RSintes · 09/01/2024 20:49

In a nearby town there used to be a huge and very well known garden centre called Marlow's so as long as you don't live in my part of the world you'll be fine.
