Baby Girl Names - Possibly Welsh/Celtic

fr4zzledmum · 07/01/2024 09:16

I don't know the gender of our baby yet, but we already have a DD with a Welsh name (we live in Wales, DH & DD are Welsh, I'm English).

I'm finding thinking of girls' names a lot easier than boys but can't settle on my favourite yet. Most are Welsh/celtic.

Currently have:

Celyn
Della
Ffion
Eirlys
Olwen
Haf
Enaid

Eira (means snow)

From your list I quite like Della.

Yes, quite a few have meanings:

Eira - Snow
Enaid - Soul
Celyn - Holly
Haf - Summer

From your list I love Ffion and Celyn, and like Della and Eirlys

Other Welsh names I love are:

Carys
Megan
Alys
Seren
Eira
Eleri

modgepodge · 07/01/2024 10:22

Merryn
cerys
seren

(actually not sure if they are welsh but I know are all liked by welsh friend of mine who wanted something ‘Celtic’!)

frayble · 07/01/2024 10:26

My favourite from your list is Eirlys.

I know several Ffions and Carys, two Alys, a Seren and an Eira (Mid-Wales).

I've never heard of the name Merryn before!

I have welsh friend called Delith. Usually gets Del.

GogLais · 07/01/2024 11:31

Celyn - seems masculine to me
Della - not Welsh or Celtic
Ffion - I know lots of them. Nice enough.
Eirlys - nice but seems dated and will get mispronounced (Air-less, Eyer-less)
Olwen - good old Welsh name
Haf - ok. Filler middle name though. Will get Haff by non-Welsh speakers
Enaid - not a name. Enid (ENN-id) is lovely.

On the others:
Carys and Cerys are 1960s names, as is Delyth.
Merryn - probably Cornish and a man's name
Seren - popular and IMO a bit 'trendy'

theduchessofspork · 07/01/2024 11:58

I love Ffion and Olwen

Gawain for a boy?

theduchessofspork · 07/01/2024 11:59

Idris also

mintich · 07/01/2024 12:04

I know three people called Merryn, all girls

AuntieMarys · 07/01/2024 12:05

Or Delyth

GogLais · 07/01/2024 12:20

It's usually spelt Delyth.
St Merryn was male.

Morgan seems to be popular on Baby Names this week and is apparently unisex.
Could fit the bill, @fr4zzledmum .

Nineteendays · 07/01/2024 12:27

ll Makes a different sound though so Della spelt with ll doesn’t really work in Welsh. You could perhaps spell it Dela

I like:
Nel
cadi
mabli
mali
ela
elin
anwen
enfys

GogLais · 07/01/2024 12:41

Dela Grwf?

Our DD is one of those names already :)

Using the top girls names in Wales for 2021, and using those that are Welsh or used as Welsh names (and using welshified spelling or the Welsh versions):
Ela
Elsi
Erin
Soffia
Alys
Ffion
Seren
Mabli
Mali
Eira
Efa
Nansi
Lili
Cadi
Elinor
Nia
Martha
Eleri
Eden
Sara
Bela
Lleucu

There are Welsh names that are more interesting than the ones in that list.

Do you want a name that works for non-Welsh speakers? Long name/shortish name? Classic/vintage/old/modern?

Nap1983 · 07/01/2024 17:13

Your completely right lol no idea why I spelt like that

GogLais · 07/01/2024 17:37

Welsh First Names / Enwau'r Cymry (9780862436469) | Heini Gruffudd | Y Lolfa is good.

Welsh baby names sites usually have dodgy entries.
If you ask on here, you'll get a list of names with some dated and many misspelt.

Derith is an unusual and hardly used Welsh girl's name.

Rhydian or Rhodri for a boy

Babyblackbear78 · 07/01/2024 18:09

Cariad
Angharad
Mabli
Seren
Ceinwyn

LydiaTomos · 07/01/2024 18:16

Ceinwen is a girls name, Ceinwyn is not.

Lots of nice suggestions here OP, and some made up names as well! (Grwf?)

Some nice names

Cari
Catrin
Betsan
Lois
Bethan
Sioned
Ceri
Lili
Gwen
Carys
Annest
Nel
Elsi
Gwennan
Gwenno
Gwenllian
Rhiannon
Mabli
Mali
Elliw
Siwan
Rhian

Good luck!

GogLais · 07/01/2024 18:33

Not Cariad. It is not a suitable name for a Welsh child and it would be embarrassing for her and for others.
Ceinwyn is not a name.

@LydiaTomos ,Wasn't there a band called De La Groove? Or De La Soul or something like that.
